Two bugs?
Bug One: I cleared the National Guard Training Yard of ghouls. Now I got to County Crossing and they give me the mission to clear the NGTY, but its already [cleared]. There is no quest marker, there are no enemies in the interior/exterior. So I can't effectively complete this mission

Bug Two: Found Jake in the Saugusworks Blast Furnace, convinced him to go back home and killed all of the Forge.
Now the game wants me to retrieve the 'family sword'. The quest marker leads back to Jake but I cant ask him for the sword, nor can I pickpocket him.

So it seems I now have 2 quests bugged in my log?

Edit: I fail the quest if I kill Jake I just found out.
Edit 2: I have a Shishkebab in my inventory which is a quest item, the marker for "Retrieve the family sword from Saugus Ironworks" now always points to me. I'm thinking the shishkebab is the family sword but seems bugged,

Being directed to a cleared site is a known bug, I think because the quest settings can be generated before you cleared the site. If it's a radiant quest like that, you may be able to ignore it until it times out and fails on its own, then go back and get a different quest later. You could also just kill off the settlers and take over County Crossing that way as an alternative to doing the clearance quest.

The shishkebab is indeed the sword referred to by the quest (it's the only non-legendary shishkebab in the game). Normally, you get it and take it back to Finch Farm. It might be that you acquired the sword before receiving the quest.

Sure looks like it yeah. Is there a way to return the Shishkebab without killing anyone? And how long does it take for quest to fail (I always like to have a 'clean' quest log).

Isnt the Shiskebab looted from the Forged Leader? I was sure he used it to behead loosers. It may be destroyed or permanently removed if it falls into the Lava Kettle.

I think you're right. I remember in the cutscene while entering the blast furnace he executes someone straight away with the Shish.

So "Abrahams family sword" or something is something else? According to the quest marker I should have it (quest marker always points to me).

I'm considering just murdering Jake and everyone else at County Crossing to dissolve the quest.

No, the sword is the shishkebab. If you listen to what Slag (the Forged leader) says, he doesn't consider Jake stealing it from his father to prove his strength.

Bug 2.
Is Jake already at the farm?
Did you take the exit wich goes to the roof of the Forge?

You're suppost to meet him just outside of the Forge and escort him to his father. He doesn't want to face his dad alone.

(it might be worth to go back into the Forge and then walk the whole way back to the bossroom and go out through the roof exit to see if that triggers the dialogue with Jake. -otherwise reload an earlier save or murder them all)

Bug 1: I experienced a slightly different version of the same bug - sent to clear it, but clearing it didn't progress the quest. On PC, the easiest fix is save your game, then use the console command
setstage MinRecruit07 200
then return to the questgiver, turn in quest.
Other solutions are waiting for the quest to fail, or using violent methods to take over the settlement for certain DLC factions.

Bug 2: I had the same issue. Go to Finch Farm, they should accept that you brought the Shishkebab (Either that or unofficial patch fixed it for me.)

hey thanks for your answer, I also have the unofficial patch installed.

Both 'bugs' resolved themselves. For instance, a few hours down the road Preston said that I should check up on County Crossing, adding a new objective to the 'stuck' quest. Once I completed that objective the whole quest completed.

As for the 'Clear out x' bug, I'm still waiting for the National Guard's interior to reset, so I can kill everything again and see if it progresses. If it doesn't I will have to resort to murdering everyone. Citizens of the Commonwealth; ye be warned
