They might have wanted to steer clear of the whole "wise magical black person" trope, since she exists entirely to serve as the Sole Survivor's psychic guide and one of the two outcomes is for her to die of a chem overdose the instant her role in the story is fulfilled.

After you play 3000 hours, you know the future far, far better than Mama Murphy ever will.

I have this crazy theory that Mama Murphy is the Institute woman with Kellogg when they kidnapped baby Shaun.
She doesn't have 'the sight', she has institute intelligence reports. She uses that information in a confidence game to get chems. Give her chems, she gives info in return.
It's the obvious answer, but people seem to easily accept that she has psychic powers.
"but that would put her upwards of 90 years old!"
yes, and she says she's a lot older than she looks. Kellogg is a lot older than he looks too.

Her predictions are so vague though. I mean some hero comes and kills a bunch of raiders with ease to reach her. That shows that you're more capable than a bunch of raiders.

Some of her predictions are also ridiculously specific, like knowing the recall code of a specific courser, or exactly what to say to Skinny Malone.
Xenon The Noble Sep 4, 2022 @ 8:44am
Really? How does that go?
"Thanks for the chems. You're going to need this courser recall code, let me write it down for you." Mama Murphy pulls out a pencil and paper and jots down the recall code.
Sole survivor is incredulous. "How do you know this recall code?! Are you with the Institute."
"No!" Murphy's agitated "I told you that it's because of the chems!"
"If this is wrong, that courser is going to kill me!" Sole Survivor protests.
"Don't worry kid, I got it straight from Dr. Ayo."

We already know exactly how Mama Murphy's vision of it goes:

He says "Z2-47, initialize factory reset. Authorization code Zeta-5-3-Kilo"... Then he falls... And he's still..."
And of course she also knows about Skinny Malone's past, which no Institute agent would have any good reason to know.
Xenon The Noble Sep 5, 2022 @ 8:55am
HOW she delivers the information, in the good fortune teller style, doesn't change one bit the argument that being a Institute agent trading information for chems rather than a skyrim style oracle.

If it was Skyrim yeah, an oracle having visions would be believable. This is Fallout, a technology and science based game. What would be more likely in this story setting of technology? That chems give some old hippy woman with 19 strength psycho powers, or that she's an enhanced agent of the Institute with Inside Information and uses that information to feed her chem addiction?

If I believed that the way information gathering worked and you only found information that was useful to you and nothing useless, then yeah.. the Institute might never know about Skinny Malone, unless they were checking to see how much Commonwealth info came before his eyes and consider replacing him with a synth. Skinny Malone is no longer small time.

She's hardly the first time we've had someone with psychic powers in the Fallout universe, starting right back in Fallout 1 with the Master, a bunch of spiritual dreams right up Mama Murphy's alley in Fallout 2 (arguable whether they're psychic or not I guess), and other scattered bits in later games.

Psychic powers have always been an established part of the Fallout universe.

I don't play other fallout games and neither did sole survivor. So, he comes out of Vault 111 with complete faith in drug induced visions and abandons all human reason?

So, what gives the old woman long life and 19 strength? Chems?

True, the Sole Survivor might not believe her at first, but they also wouldn't have much reason to think she's an Institute agent either, since they know almost nothing about it.

Hard to say about the strength, but synths don't inherently have higher strength than a normal person, so chems make as much sense as anything. She's perfectly willing to risk her life dropping a dose of psycho.
Zekiran Sep 5, 2022 @ 9:32pm
She could also easily have mixed and matched - exposure to rads, chem use, more exposure to rads, possible influence from any given weird supernatural or otherworldly being. Maybe she's actually a supermutant, who regressed or was changed with chems or other experiments.

Maybe she just exploited the same glitches as me. :steammocking:

Sadly, the only Mama Murphy mods out there just reconfigure her appearance into something sad nerds can fap to.
Try these excellent mods to create an immersive Mama Murphy true to her concept art.

Then equip her with this weapon, and she'll be one-shot killing deathclaws with a pipe pistol again:

I just died laughing at the green skin Mama Murphy in her chair screenshot.
