Wow. I just had deja vu that this turned out badly for me.
She doesn't have 'the sight', she has institute intelligence reports. She uses that information in a confidence game to get chems. Give her chems, she gives info in return.
It's the obvious answer, but people seem to easily accept that she has psychic powers.
"but that would put her upwards of 90 years old!"
yes, and she says she's a lot older than she looks. Kellogg is a lot older than he looks too.
"Thanks for the chems. You're going to need this courser recall code, let me write it down for you." Mama Murphy pulls out a pencil and paper and jots down the recall code.
Sole survivor is incredulous. "How do you know this recall code?! Are you with the Institute."
"No!" Murphy's agitated "I told you that it's because of the chems!"
"If this is wrong, that courser is going to kill me!" Sole Survivor protests.
"Don't worry kid, I got it straight from Dr. Ayo."
And of course she also knows about Skinny Malone's past, which no Institute agent would have any good reason to know.
If it was Skyrim yeah, an oracle having visions would be believable. This is Fallout, a technology and science based game. What would be more likely in this story setting of technology? That chems give some old hippy woman with 19 strength psycho powers, or that she's an enhanced agent of the Institute with Inside Information and uses that information to feed her chem addiction?
If I believed that the way information gathering worked and you only found information that was useful to you and nothing useless, then yeah.. the Institute might never know about Skinny Malone, unless they were checking to see how much Commonwealth info came before his eyes and consider replacing him with a synth. Skinny Malone is no longer small time.
Psychic powers have always been an established part of the Fallout universe.
So, what gives the old woman long life and 19 strength? Chems?
Hard to say about the strength, but synths don't inherently have higher strength than a normal person, so chems make as much sense as anything. She's perfectly willing to risk her life dropping a dose of psycho.
