I don't really care about dressing up my protagonist, companions or settlers, nor do I care about looks.
All the armor parts are cobbled together from leather, metal and combat armor parts, just because they have good legendary effects.
And since I've upgraded my military uniform with ballistic weave, I haven't changed the underclothes at all.
I mean I'm wearing the HEV mkV armor mod, with other stuff under it so it looks super grafted together in a real sense. But that said, I often put Preston in the Grognak outfit, or as above X6 in such a flattering outfit it goes so well with his skin tone :D
