Your Barney has a different refid than the one that gives you the quest and any checks on the refid will just not work
1) if you have a save from before you used the placeatme load it.
2) in the console type
prid 67C96
if that does not give an error type

see if that brings you to you
Yep. I did a playthrough once where I let Barney kill the mirelurks by luring them back to him and he wouldn't let me in after that. Had to do it myself.
But it's possible you started off the defense quest then left the area. he died and then corpse is gone. You can find his REFID online then type in console: REFID.moveto player & check his pulse.
Unfortunately my game isn't recognizing this ref id at all either :/ I guess it just wasn't meant to be. Thank you for your help!
Yeah this is what I ended up doing. I love completing every side quest everytime I play but the book was really what I wanted :)
My fix completely resolves it but it's not for regular players, well I'll tell you anyway;
- open fo4edit and find quest by searching its questId (upper left corner)
- then right click on the quest and choose "copy into (overwrite)"
- on the upper right there is a editbox for filtering the choosen content, write "run once" in it and press enter
- it will find an entry contains run once string. change it and make it repeatable.
- save your changes (make an .esp, a mod) and exit.
+ before activating your modification enter your game once and go ontop of the house (where barney should be standing) and make a quicksave
- exit game activate your mod and enter the game and load your quicksave
- nothing will happen for a while, turn around and go back to the stairs.. and you will hear barney talking..
- dont lose any time and turn around again and run, jump down and keep running (towards salem along the shoreline)
- then turn around and come back to the barney's home front as it was your first time..
Quest will work like it never bugged out.. mirelurks will spawn etc. good luck :)
I found out that if you found/enter/do things (unconfirmed which action does it) at Sandy Coves Convalescent Homes (SCCH) first BEFORE going to where Barney is, this bug happens.
What I did was circumvent SCCH altogether to avoid discovering it. I think it doesn't matter how you do it as long as you don't discover it, and go straight to where Barney and the 3 m'lurks is and I get the entire side quest done with no problems.
It doesn't fix if he's already vanished though, or dead.
In playing "Punished Nate", he doesn't stand insults from anybody. It's another "I'm your better so you go out and die doing my bidding" quest.
