Questions on NPC/Companions level, gear and damages
Hi,
Are companions and friendly NPC taking collateral (friendly fire) damage from shots and explosions coming from the player and/or other companions?

How can I know their health, level, etc.

Do the gear and weapons I gave them actually serve something or that's just cosmetic? Should I change Preston laser musket to something else?

Do they gain XP or levels? How can I know a bit more about Preston stats and perks e.g.?

Yes there is friendly fire from and to the companions and friendly NPC's.

Some companions even lose their "Essential" status (essential meaning they cannot be killed, only downed) when being dismissed or leaving due to hating the player! This means the player (or another companion following the player) could then potentially kill the dismissed companion!

The Charisma perk "Inspirational" is the only way to upgrade the companions, they don't have levels like the player:

Level 1: Companions do more damage and cannot hurt the player
Level 2: Companions resist more damage and cannot be hurt by the player
Level 3: Carry weight limit of all companions is increased by +25

You can check their special stats here[fallout.fandom.com].

There are some ways of upgrading the companions carry weight limit next to the Inspirational perk:
- (Humanoid companions only) Make them wear armor that is modded with "pocketed" (+30) or "deep pocketed" (+60) add on.
- Issue #3 of "Live & Love" increases all companion carry capacity by =10

Compagnons do have levels and scale with you, gaining a bit more health each time.

Weapons and armor work on them, but you'll need to supply them with ammo if they're using anything other than their standard weapon

That is incorrect! Companions don't level up, their health points just always adjust with the player level: 185 + ([Player Level - 10] x 5)!
It might seem that they level up when the player does, but they don't!

Thanks. No possibility to check live their status though.
I can give them backpacks and bags also?

I have liga of my companions but I don't see any special command.

no they levelup with you, curie levelup too but her life don't increase, well it's another mechanic for her.
but so far only the life and dmg dealt are increasing, the special stats are always the same.

if you want to know the exact detailed stat of a companion , a mod like "liga of my companions" can give you the exact stats of companions ( affinity, level, resistance, specials, health, stamina, carryweight etc.... )
nevertheless liga does not give info about perks
Again: Companions do NOT have levels, their health points just scale with the level of the player from lvl 10 on!
Also, their damage does NOT increase outside of giving them better weapons and taking lvl1 of the Inspirational perk!

All wikis (fandom / fallout wiki, etc.) confirm that!

What do you mean, they don't have levels? Everyone/thing has levels, I blatantly see it with awareness perk.
They don't get benefits aside health from levels (no perks, no DR, no DD, no attribute gainetc), that's true, and they don't level up from xp, because they don't have xp mechanics, their level is simply tied to PC.
But they have levels, as a technical stat, it is just not leveling system. You can say that effectively it's "fake" levels, nothing but health points scaling, and this will be true, but nontheless.

Check the fallout wiki, there are no levels mentioned, only special stats and how their health scales from player level.

Check the Creation Kit and it'll tell you otherwise

First - fallout wiki is not a bible, just like with any wiki. And if something didn't mentioned by wiki != it doesn't exist, that's not how logic gates work.
Second - I checked and under stats bar there's literally written - "level", just after the s.p.e.c.i.a.l parameters.

you can repeat again 1000 times if you want,

they have a number of level which increase same as the player, so technically they have levels.

for the dmg, i assume :

i think their dmg increase per level, same as the player,
player dmg increase per level.
otherwise, if they always kept doing the same dmg as when they were level 1O, then they would do like 0,00001 dmg to a level 100 mob at level 100, but it's not the case.
just think a little. wiki is not the bible.

well it's not proved but it's so logical.
Got any source for your damage increase nonsense?

no it's my opinion, neverteless look at this :
corvega raiders don't level up that's a fact.
when you're level 10 with piper for exemple with her default 10mm pistol, she needs like 10 hits to kill one raider.
come back when you are level 40 or more, the raiders have the same low level as when you were there at level 10 ( because they don't level up) , piper with her default pistol now kill them in 1 or 2 hit.
if piper's dmg output didn't get higher then she would still need 10 bullets to kill those raiders.
Opinions are like as*holes: everybody has one and some stink... Other people here brought facts (like checking the creation kit) that make sense, but your opinion is just that... An opinion!
And claiming that wiki's are not a bible: they might not be, but hundreds of people proof read them and correct them constantly, so I trust their opinion more then yours!

i gave a logical explanation on how there's a dmg multiplier mecanic in the game.
and what proof did you bring ?. nothing except your butthurt opinion, town down your assh first and show me some proofs then i will start to believe you're not just a frustrated nerd.
i have no problem admitting i'm wrong if someone show me the facts and proofs.
but with respectfull tone, not like your butthurt post.
Wrong, I pointed towards the wiki that is maintained by hundreds of people! :steamfacepalm:

You should stop acting like a steam forum Karen and go outside to touch some grass...
