Survival VATS Freeze

I'm real into fallout 4, particularly survival mode, but the vats crash makes it difficult to play for long. Does anyone know a legit fix for this issue, I know theres the vats crash mod but it doesn't fix it for survival mode. Is there a way to fiddle with the game to get this to stop happening? lost a lot of progress throughout my playthroughs to this bug and its driving me batty

(edit) turning off and back on survival mode seems to have fixed the issue on the large part, the game still crashes sometimes but frankly i'll just install a survival mod for quicksaving to get around that. thanks for the help all

Far as I can tell, no. Their survival mode is such trash it's a shame they didn't actually test it before release. If you're playing advanced levels (past 50) it seems to get worse for some people too.

If even thinking of playing survival, I MUST install SKK's Survival Save mod.

EDIT:
Manual save is an absolute protocol habit by a lot of players. To counter crashes... it all but demands it.

thats what i use and it works. you may need a fresh start for that to function idk

It plays fine on Survival for me. I did a pure ( no mods, glitches, etc. ) Survival run to level 71 and do not remember ever having a Vats related crash. Then again, I am not a heavy Vats user for range weapons.

But I use Vats a lot with melee weapons and I have played a melee focus run to level 54 in a Survival run. Do not remember Vats crashes being a problem. There may be other things which are causing your game to crash using Vats in Survival.

You use a mouse and keyboard I assume?

yes and this happens not super often but always with ranged stuff now that i think about it

Cause i know the cause of VATS freeze in Survival and i both know a modless workaround and a mod that fixes it.

VATS freeze fix mod on the nexus does work, I know because I used to have the same problem with VATS crashing the game in survival mode. You just need to read the info for the mod more carefully.

The bug has something to do with the potion buff/de buff icons appearing when your food and drink needs change, if it happens during VATS it caused a crash.

After installing the fix, make sure to disable survival mode and then re enable it. If you don't know how to do that, then you need to set the game to anything other than survival in the menu, then open the console and enter cgf "Game.IncrementStat" "Survival Denied" -1

That will then allow you to change back to survival. The fix only works for new games or if you switch difficulty like i just explained.

Survival mode is not trash, it's actually the best way to play fallout 4, gives the game more depth. As long you install the VATS freeze fix, you will not encounter anymore bugs than you would in normal mode. The only downside is the possibility of losing game time if fallout 4 crashes before you can find a bed to save, which everyone agrees is annoying and upsetting, but there are lots of beds scattered about the world for you to save and it's thankfully a rare occurrence. The same thing can happen on normal mode if you simply forget to save. My character in survival is level 100 as of yesterday and so far I'm still having a blast.

Or a workaround if you don't want to use the VATS freeze fix or don't want to abandon your current playthrough is fairly simple:

Eat a piece of food and drink water before using VATS in a fight.
Sounds silly i know but "it just works" cause the freeze is caused by your needs and popups related to them triggering when you are activating VATS ... which one would think shouldn't happen as often but in reality it does happen quite a bit.

I have not had good luck with eating food and drinking water just before I am due for hunger or thirst. Almost as if the timer is not reset. I've had peckish pop up within 30 seconds of eating a rib-eye steak. What does seem to be working is the cutting back on VATS by about 10% and mixing in some melee attacks. Just two freezes in 40 levels instead of 60+.

doctor fix (so your rad can be cured completely)

these are only mods i use. they are just script files actually, your achievements wont stop, noone will know they are there.

you need them for a proper survival play

Keep in mind popping syringes and some chems immediatley increases thirst. Some consumables also immediatley increase hunger. If you spam them via favorites hotkeys instead from pip boy menu and time it poorly with vats use these needs can trigger at same time or shortly after when you are popping vats due to scrip lag/delay.

I never had a incident ever again after i started drinking n eating before using vats. Nor did i have incident with diseases and vats.

It's a workaround not perfect by any means but yea alternative is the mod that requires fresh playthrough to work or not using VATS

do all workarounds by eating and drinking, it doesnt really matter. you can still get sick suddenly any time. it can hit you anytime if you are unlucky enough.

its not a game feature its a bug, needs to be fixed.
