Do you have the grenades selected in the inventory? If so, are you using mods?

Did you favourite grenades to a key? And configure a key to throw them? And are grenades showing up in the bottom right of the screen above your ammo?

On PC, it is the Alt key. Pressing it causes a weapon bash (or power attack, if using a melee weapon), holding it down until you hear the click prepares a grenade (provided you have a grenade, mine, or molotov selected in your Pipboy), which will be thrown once you release the key. With the right perk, if you don't have an explosive of some kind selected and are in power armor, it will instead eject a fusion core at your feet that acts like a grenade.

"Q" is the key (by default, I think) for opening the Quick Key Menu. Highlight grenades in the Weapons list and press "Q". Then click the number key of what you want Grenades to be. In-game, press that number key, and grenades + the quantity, will show in the bottom right corner. Configure the key for throwing them (my keyboard has it as "Bash/Throw Grenade".) Just hold down the key until you hear the pin clink, and release. For different grenades (Smoke, Plasma etc.) you'll have to do the same thing with a different number for the quick key. You'll see the type change in the bottom right corner.

Hilarious. Post a video, if you know how.

The Left Alt key for pc. But the grenades need to be selected in your inventory or quick keyed ( Q ) to equip them.

Equip the grenade in your inventory press and hold "left ALT key by default for keyboard" to throw said grenades, however if you do not equip them from your inventory there is a perk for power armor that drops fusion cores as mini nuclear bombs, this is what is happening for you most likely so make sure the actual grenades are equipped from the inventory menu

That explains things.

My guess:
You have the Nuclear Physicist perk at rank 3.
Because that enables you do eject your power armor's fusion core as a makeshift mini-nuke by pressing a button.

The kicker: Bethesda use the same hard-coded button for grenade throwing by holding it.

On PC this is extra fun when you want to Alt-Tab to your Windows desktop.

Globefish - yes I do Nuc level 3. How to remove it????

Update: I have recently moved onto Win 11, and several 'bugs' have been noted. I dont know if 11 is the problem, but after I had read the posts (thank you all) I put game on and saw that the Frags had been removed to make way for the FC throw. I dont think this was win 11, I think the game in Win 11, possibly. I reinstated the frags and it works again.

I suppose that I would have to start again, or at best go back until I no longer have nuc level 3??? Whatever it was, I didnt touch nuffin guv!

To remove Nuclear Physicist 3, you'd need to use a console command (removeperk). The IDs for the perk ranks are listed on the wiki:

https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Nuclear_Physicist#Ranks

So something like:
player.removeperk 001D2471
This won't automatically refund you the perk point spent on it, though.
