What graphics setting is tanking my fps?
Rtx3060ti 36fps average. I set graphics to high in graphics settings. I really feel like it should be getting more than this on this new rig and dont want to go through every setting to find which one is tanking the performance. Do you people know which it is?

usually people say it's the godrays or the shadows. my GPU is kind of a potato so i'm really not 100% sure what affects those newer cards

EDIT:

from my guide

OK, so, there are a few things you can do to avoid FPS drops in this game. First, the game was optimized using pre-combines which is where they combine multiple objects into one object to have less polygons to render. This generally makes the area load and run faster. If you use mods like scrapping and cleaning mods the break pre-combines, you will undoubtedly see significant FPS drops.

One thing worth mentioning up front is about the DLC: High-Res Texture Pack. DO NOT USE THIS! 90% of the people who install this DLC report serious FPS drops, micro-stutter and other display problems. If you want better textures, look to the mods on Nexus. Good 4k textures are there that won't drag your FPS down nearly as much.

Another thing that needs to come up first is the framerate. If your FPS is above 60 then it causes all kinds of problems, one of which, can be micro-stutter. It's important to limit your framerates to 60 in this game. It's not just what the game engine wants, it absolutely demands it. Now it is possible to set it to 72 or 74, and there are some people who claim to have it set at like 140 and it runs fine. But you need to have a lot of things right in your system from certain hardware to specific settings to pull that off. That exceeds the depth of this guide so I'm just going to move on using the standard "cap FPS to 60" method, which is suggested by Bethesda.

Another thing that comes up in the discussion boards is poor performance using godrays. It's often suggested to disable them but again, there's a mod that aims to correct the problem instead.

Be sure to also check your other programs running with Windows. Try ending some programs and see if it fixes the problem. I can't stress it enough. Sometimes the problem is another program and not even the game itself. At least try it so you can rule it out as a possibility.

Now, sometimes the problem is in your system configuration. One user posted a solution to fixing his framerate problem in Windows 10 using the Windows troubleshooter. Here's what he said:

Fixed Framerate Problem with Win 10 Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. (edited for readability)

I ran Fallout 4 on Win 7 with everything cranked up to Ultra and had no issues whatsoever with framerates (i7 4790K 4G; GTX 970; 16G Ram)
THEN I installed Windows 10 - huge framerate problems - MAJOR frustration factor.

Solution: did toolbar search for "troubleshooter"; opened the Troubleshooter window; clicked on "Additional Troubleshooters" and scrolled down to the "Program Compatibility Troubleshooter"; clicked on that and then "Run the Troubleshooter" and let it do its thing.

It comes back with a list of programs with potential issues. Find "Fallout 4.exe" and click on it. Two options at this point:
1.) Try Recommended Settings (my choice); or
2.) Troubleshoot Program (no idea what this does).

Again, I let it run and it returned a message about fixing "high system [not program] DPI settings" and when I tested it, it ran beautifully. Apparently there was something going on with my global display settings that I wasn't aware of and don't have the expertise to know that was an issue to try fixing.

Anyway - hope this helps somebody.

Again I'm going to suggest performance mods as a solution to FPS drops and poor performance.

There is a graphics settings guide here -
www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/fallout-4-graphics-performance-and-tweaking-guide/

Note that godrays adds "dust" in the air everywhere so you may want to turn it off completely. This is done in the ini files and there are two settings which have to go off. Google it.

The hi-res texture pack will reduce performance. It is designed for 4k monitors and there are better textures as mods.

To check if it's your gpu that is bottlenecking the system, look at the % load. If it's 100 or thereabouts it's the gpu. If it's lower then it's the cpu. Note that the fps is actually generated by the cpu. The gpu can only match it or limit it.

You should also check your nvidia control panel and make sure the gpu settings e.g. high performance mode are set correctly.

You also need to set ipresentinterval to 0 in the inis and cap your fps to 60 in the control panel.

The game is bugged. It's supposed to cap your FPS at 60, but it only works if your refresh rate is 60 hz or 120 hz. Use whatever Nvidia control panel settings you want to in order to achieve that. Just make sure the game is capped at 60 FPS by some means.

Its not to do with consoles, its to do with physics etc tied into the engine, the underlying engine has been like it for years.

Though they had to heavily modify it for vr as that needs more than 60fps to work. So hopefully future games wont have the restriction.

Uninstall High Resolution Texture Pack and your fps will be on top again.

Could be a combination of things. I am using the RTX 3060 Ti to play the game and am not suffering from performance issues.

I have all settings on ultra, view distances to max, with the exception I have Godrays set to med ( because I do not like the overkill it shows set to ultra. ) and weapon debris, wetness off. I am using the HBAO+ selection in the start up menu under Options > Advance, I think it makes some visual improvements in the game's textures.

I would look at other things than just one thing. Such as the game was not meant to be run in any higher resolution than 1920 x 1080, at 60 hz. 60 fps. Also some Steam settings could be causing some slow downs.

Steam Overlay, Cloud and Notifications. I have those all off. Also set all games in your library to only update when you launch the game. And turn off any unneeded programs running in the background.

Sorry to bump this but check this out.

https://exputer.com/guides/errors/fallout-4-low-fps/

You need to alter 4-5 files I believe and then you launch the game, after a clean install, no mods, and boom 100 fps (capped by nvidia by personal choice). I have search 30 minutes for this info but realy did like 20 hours of testing in total, all different scenarios, give this a try and let me know if this helped anyone.

36 average on a 3060 wtf? 3070 here and its working fine for me, 60 - 144, but I lowered the fps of course cause of the physics

I would alter the shadow settings in your ini as the launchers defaults are rubbish.

Running 120hz/120FPS uncapped Enhanced Sync. killed all v-syncs.
My game loads areas fast too and the busy lag areas do not stomp me with 0FPS, I get by at 35-45fps in those places.

RTX 3080 playing on Steam Proton on Linux, 60 FPS solid, wish I could help with a tip but I did turn off things I turn off in all games like ambient occlusion and depth of field. https://steamcommunity.com/app/377160/discussions/0/496880503080904036
im on an rx580 and i can run the game maxed out no issue, maybe its a cpu issue? i have a 12th gen i3.
