Game parts in Spanish
I have this pistol mod that I truly love, Walther P99. A few months ago that I had to reinstall everything, and was shocked to find that the mod author had pulled Walther P99 from the Nexus. However, there was still the Spanish version in Nexus. Shouldn't be a problem, I thought, a pistol mod is just meshes and textures right? Wrong. Aside from all the workshop modding stuff being in Spanish (this expected of course, but very poorly translated), some in-game texts started to pop up in Spanish as well. Mainly, the notices that a settlement is under attack. "Estan atacando Sanctuary Hills!". On occasion some other texts. Even though I'm fluent in Spanish, the feeling that something's broken annoys me.
So I finally found the original mod outside of Nexus. I completely uninstalled the Spanish mod, then installed the English Walther P99. The workshops texts are now just fine, English. However, "ahora estan atacando Tenpines Bluff!". The Spanish notifications did not go away. I already did a validation (one file failed), but the language didn't change. I am considering reinstalling the game, but was wondering if there might not be some ini file or something like that, which could easily be substituted or fixed instead of doing the whole thing (it's a lot of work). Any ideas?

you know, i had a whole section stored in my text file about changing language in this game and i must have CUT it to PASTE it somewhere and forgot to paste it. because it's gone. :(

but it detailed how to alter language files using INI settings. i am searching the forum now trying to find that information again

for now if you want you can try this

Right click on your Fallout 4 listing in your Library, choose properties then Langauge. Set it to the one you want from the drop down menu.

maybe try changing the lang. to spanish, then change it back to english and re-validate files.

but i'm going to keep looking for those INI settings in the meantime

alright so i found this

Documents/My Games/Fallout 4/Fallout4.ini

[General]
sLanguage=en

that's how you can set the language in INI

but there's also this, see if you have this folder

Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Data\Strings

make sure all the files in there say "_en" in them for the language. you might need to run the validator again? i remember reading somewhere that someone was able to fix the language in their game by altering these files.

Thanks, I already did the change to Spanish/ change to English thing (2.94 GB per change). I will check the files you say, and then to play and wait to see if "Oiga amigo, tiene abierta la cremallera..."
EDIT: Wait, I have no Strings folder in my Fallout 4 /Data...

ok, well, the forum isn't really being helpful. lot of unanswered topics and unresolved problems.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/377160/discussions/search/?gidforum=618463738384243716&include_deleted=1&q=language&p=1

but i did go searching google and nexus and found this

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/97

it's a mod which creates those strings files for you. all in english. so it should overwrite anything else you have in a BA file or ESP file or wherever you're getting that spanish from.

i really don't know how to fix it so this method will hopefully overwrite it.

Thanks for the interest. This is all getting a bit complicated. Hopefully, the Spanish/English flip flop will fix the issue, if not, I will have to decide between seeing the occasional Spanish text, which I understand perfectly just feels out of place, or do a reinstall.
Demmed Spanish pistol mod... At least a lesson learned.

i know how it goes. am trying to start my play-through but stuck troubleshooting 300 mods. a handful of them aren't working right. it's taking some tinkering to get going.

you use mods anyways though right? i'd just download that english strings mod. if you use vortex it's easy, if you manually mod it's still easy just put the string files into the strings folder and your issue is probably solved.

i always have those files because of some mod that alters them so i'm just used to seeing them there.

But that strings mod is for changing everything from American to England English, I understand? Killing the patient to cure the disease 8<D I have a number of other mod incompatibilities so maybe a clean up will be healthy. I will play it out to see if the flip flop helped though and will report it, that can be useful if it works.

ok, yeah. makes sense.

i did find this one also, which looks like it covers a lot of languages and it's quite newer

Strings for Fallout 4 All DLCs
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/32656/

but it does the same thing. creates / overwrites strings files. this one also overwrites interface files too tho

I clean reinstalled the game and every mod. I did not use the Spanish mod this time. I got rid of several mods, especially the newer ones.
Everything seemed to be fine, until today... Estan atacando a Starlight Drive. (Pulling out hair).

I found this mod which gives you a Strings folder, it has Strings with a lot of languages. I don't want to mess things up more, should I copy to my game only the .en files, or all the files as the mod author indicates (he says just copy the folder to your Fallout Data), or the specific file that will make my problem go away? There are .DLSTRINGS , .ILSTRINGS and .STRINGS files, and versions for each DLC.
BTW how can the game manage language if it has no Strings folder (seems to be a feature of recent installs)? It seems to me that the game saved some Spanish stuff somewhere (the cloud maybe) and that's why I can't get rid of it.
EDIT: Alright, did all the thing, no luck. I just have to resign myself that my favorite game is broken forever. Well, a bit broken.

Start a new game and see if that fixes it. Strings are saved in the savefile.
Charlemagne May 25, 2022 @ 12:15pm
This is a new game (after totally reinstalling the game and mods). The problem persists exactly as is was before, as of the OP.
I as reading that the separate folder Strings no longer is supposed to exist, and that Fallout keeps strings in the ba2. Whatever ba2 would this be?
Charlemagne May 25, 2022 @ 12:43pm
Oh boy I found it, I found it almost by accident while looking for those pesky ba2 files. It wasn't the game, it wasn't the strings, it wasn't the Spanish pistol mod (good riddance anyway), it was precisely the mod that changes notifications, Shaikujin's Better Warning. While perusing mods that have a ba2, the corner of my eye caught: (Spanish translation). I accidentally installed the Spanish version. Dammit. Fixed and fixed. :lunar2019laughingpig:
