Taking Point: Spectacle Island issue/glitch
So I started a new game where I played through the Far Harbour missions first before doing anything in the Commonwealth, building and outfitting a sizeable army, automatrons, Mechs, etc in Maine, crushing all raider/trapper filth underfoot-- fun time had by all. I eventually returned to the Commonwealth and began by clearing and powering Spectacle Island to get access to the workshop to use it as a staging area for my expansion into the Commonwealth. Zero problems activating the power and white noise generators there (all done normally and without console commands), with the mirelurks who weren't killed off having scarpered. After gaining access to the workshop, I built facilities for a garrison and a prison for the eventual Synth infiltrators who'll start appearing, and subsequently brought over a couple of platoons of Death Korps of Kreig who'll take and hold settlements on the mainland.

All running smoothly so far.

After a couple of months of this, I decided to start the Minutemen storyline and bring them into the fold. Now I've been tasked by Preston to take Spectacle Island and establish a recruitment beacon-- I purposely didn't build one when I activated the workshop originally. The objectives are:

1: clear the island
2: Build a beacon
3: Return to Preston

Nothing I haven't done a bunch of times before. However, when I arrive at the Island now, a single mirelurk spawns in near the workshop and is quickly killed by the garrison (there's only one, I've checked repeatedly for others, only one ever spawns), but the 'clear the island' objective never checks off. I can build the beacon and activate it, but that objective doesn't check off. And if I return to Preston, there's no option to talk with him to finish the mission. Apparently (according to the Spectacle Is. wikia) there's a bug where enemies don't spawn in, making the mission impossible to complete, which seems likely where I'm at.

So in order to try and complete this quest, I've tried running around the island typing 'kah' into the console to kill any potential hostiles (there are none), I've tried skipping the quest stage past 'clearing the island' to the 'build a beacon' stage and I've tried skipping to the 'return to Preston' stage-- I get the objective complete/return to Garv notification when I build the beacon, however whenever I return to Preston if I've skipped the 'clear the island' part, I get successful completion dialogue, but I always fail the mission.

Is this because I took the island without going through Preston initially or is something else in play? Anyone else come across this? Any remedies?

I do not remember ever doing a quest from Preston to take that island. Even with multiple runs doing the main story ending with the MM. After more than 3200+ hrs playing the game. You using a mod?

In every playthrough I've ever done, the Spectacle Island quest was always given to me by the Railroad and never Preston Garvey. If you check the wiki, Spectacle Island is not listed as a potential location in any of the minuteman radiant quests so I'm positive it's one or more of your mods that are sending you there.

I suggest reading the mod page(s) including the Posts and Bugs sections.

I don't recall getting it from Preston either, I do know PAM gives it as a railroad safe house quest. Regardless I would guess the issue to be the white noise siren, sometimes the mirelurks run into the water. This seems to screw things up pretty bad for the clear flag to be set. In that situation I would say your only option is to try to find any mirelurkers in the water so you can lure them out to the needed area to complete the quest.

You can definitely get it from Garvey/PAM as a radiant quest (or anyone else who gives out radiant settlement quests). Any settlement that doesn't unlock through specific scripted means (so not Mechanist's Lair, Nuka World settlements initially, factional HQs etc) can be included as part of that radiant list, and that includes the majority of Commonwealth settlements including Spectacle-- it says as much on the settlements page. That list on the Taking Point wikia page isn't at all the complete list of settlements. And whilst I *am* using mods, I don't run any that alter or affect Spectacle Island, hostile creatures, settlement beacons, Preston Garvey or any quests at all (I don't have *any* modded quests whatsoever). That and I was able to find an old save from a different FO4 playthrough where Spec Island was completely untouched and not a part of my coterie of settlements and managed to wrangle the gig out of Preston (Took about 6 hours of farting about) and it seemed to work out fine.

I hope you're wrong, but I reckon this is what it might be-- either that or the hostile don't spawn glitch this Island apparently has from time to time. Some of the mirelurks were able to slip away when I took the island a couple of months ago, but this quest notwithstanding, I haven't seen any hostiles spawning on or even near the island. I guess it's time to bust out the diving bell and have a wander around to see if there's anything underwater.

Is the Mirelurk Queen you fight when clearing the island flagged in the radiant quests at all? I don't suppose I could just spawn in a bunch of mirelurks and a queen in and see if that trips the objective?

Spectacle Island has one queen mirelurk, one/two king mirelurk, a couple of the spitting mirelurks(forget their names) and several mirelurks when you first arrive there. It can be opened up by any faction giving out radiant quests or not. Sometimes you will not get any quest to open it.

When the island is attacked they come from the north and via the beach to the west and occasionally one or two from the east below the workbench station. I've never had them spawn next to the workbench station/shack.

Are your defences killing the mirelurk super quickly?

If so try taking the defences down and letting the mirelurk attack and you kill it. See what happens.

I've opened spectacle without any radiant quest and it made no difference. The island has always opened up for myself after killing the mirelurk queen and activating the power.

However, search the island very carefully, especially to the north.

i've always just had to turn on the power, deal with the queen and then go turn on the mirelurk repellent sound generator.

this game i dealt with the queen by chucking a smoke grenade out and hiding in the ship as shelling commenced
