But they aren't labled with .ini
They are configuration files. Is that normal or do I just rename?
In Windows 10:
- Take a look at top right corner of the folder view. There is a gray arrow next to blue question mark. Click the arrow.
- Select View tab from left of the screen.
- Set File name extensions active.
yes that is normal just double click on the Fallout4 file and open in notepad or wordpad or other editor if you have one installed. Also do what above poster said to show extensions properly. You can do it on the fly if you prefer no ext temporarily just so you can find certain kinds of files
So turns out NMM is about to die... was talking to a staffer on discord and he said the new Vortex program was the preferred way to install mods. Gonna give that a try now.
Latest updated 18 days ago you get updates to nmm here if your interested.
https://github.com/Nexus-Mods/Nexus-Mod-Manager/releases
Edit - Checked Vortex keep in mind that is Alpha you could literally bork your entire install up. At least nmm is established and I have personally never had a problem with the latest version on github.
- Vortex is the new official manager, but still in Alpha.
- Mod Organizer 2 is currently most functional manager for Fallout 4, but not officially supported. It does have wide community support and development team.
Both managers have wider learning curve than NMM did. If recommend watching official tutorial series for the manager you choose.
- Vortex has ongoing official tutorial series from Gopher.
- MO2 has official tutorial series from GamerPoets.
I can link the one you want, or both for comparison.
Sadly, it is not.
NMM code has been badly bugged, since ESL update last winter. It can install files to wrong folders, or leave them out entirely.
Several mod authors - including Sim Settlements author Kinggath - have directly recommended not using NMM to install their mods or addons for them.
Unless the current team can somehow sort out the problem (which does not look likely), NMM is quite done for.
Of course the issue does not appear for all, or all the time. If the problem was straightforward, then it would have been sorted by now. NMM is old Fallout manager, which was never meant to be used as it is. It was only a matter of time before it broke down.
Fallout 76 is only online there is no single player aspect to that game so no I am not going to get it. I am going to wait for a single player Fallout 5 to come out. There is also a remake of Fallout New Vegas in the FO4 engine. You can see it in action at www.f4nv.com
I didn't see the edit you made above. You are correct: Vortex is still in alpha and can cause trouble. It has been quite stable though.
I am using MO2 myself, though I am also supporting Vortex development. MO2 will always be only for Bethesda games, while Vortex is meant to cover Nexus more widely.
It is updated fairly frequently actually I always have the latest version installed. I have never had a problem installing any mods and I always use Sim Settlements when I play. I use NMM on 5 different games with zero issues so guess I am one of the lucky ones. I know about the wrong installs but I believe they fixed some of that or lessened the effect a few updates ago.
Ah ok. I know I tried MO2 and my poor brain impoded then exploded trying to figure it out lol. I am hoping Vortex will be more along the simplicity side like nmm is? Just with less bugs of course.
