Vault 88 (DLC) quest help - can't open door...
Hi folks,

OK, I'm level 30, well over the min level. I've installed the DLC, listened to the beacon, and show 'Vault Tec Calling' as the next quest section. I've gone to the place, killed all the raiders, and made it to the door, killing the last 3 raiders in the door room.

I hit the button (which is indicated by a quest marker), I see the animation of my character using the pip boy to activate the door... and that's it. Nothing else happens.

Tried poking about online, but can't find anything that matches my spot - and can't get the door to open or anyone to talk to me to actually progress on to vault tec calling.

Any ideas?

Usually when you do the thing with your Pip Boy they talk to you and ask who you are and such. Nobody talks to you? And here's a really stupid question. Is your volume up high enough to hear them?

I haven't had the same problem myself. Maybe exit the game and restart. That fixes 90% of the glitches I have had.

Yeah, was expecting a dialogue (like the Vault 81 folks) but didn't get anything.... volume was low, but loud enough that I'd have heard it. Also, if it was dialogue with options, I'd think I'd have seen on-screen indications for me to select a response...

I'm kind of at a loss... Going to go back outside, maybe I missed a raider out there and I was supposed to kill all of them before coming inside...

There is only 3 raiders you need to kill. And like One Eye jack mentioned, try quitting the game and then reloading. Quests can get bugged sometimes and that often will fix them.

You also need to wait a bit for the Vault door to open.

Tried exiting, leaving, coming back, waiting for 5 minutes... all there is is me staring at a sealed vault door..., :(

The automated distress beacon is still running on the radio station.

Try doing other quests for a while and come back? Don't know what else to suggest if the internet doesn't have any answers. I have had broken quests fix themselves over time in the past.

A couple things to try:

1.) Fast travel to somewhere else, like diamond city. Once there, for good measure, sit on a bench or chair and wait for 24 hours, then fast travel back, and try again.

2.) I've read another user with this issue, where the door didn't work until he tried opening it while in power armor. Kind of weird, but might be worth a try.

If all else fails, try loading an older save and trying again. I know it sucks, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do with Bethesda games...

i 2nd the vote for trying to open/close the door while wearing power armor. all my searches pulled up countless users saying that was the solution for them. this might mean you will always have to be wearing power armor to use the door. personally i open the door once then it stays open forever.

however, if you want, you can open the ~ console and type TCL in there. that toggles the clipping mode and will let you walk through walls. it's not really a solution to your problem but it will get you to the other side while the door remains closed.

OK, that was it - I had run off and done a few other quests, then found myself back at base, so I figured what the heck. Lumbered into the power armor, fast traveled to Vault 88, and the door worked right away.

So, yeah, power armor. Go figure.

Power Armor is not the solution. The wait and doing other stuff and then going back was the solution. This is a common thing which will fix some quests not working. I have did Vault 88 both ways, going there in power armor and not in power armor and never had any issues.

...well, thing is, I had waited and gone back a few times without power armor, and had no luck - so I'm still not convinced it wasn't the missing element. No way to know now, I've progressed far enough I don't have a save I can go back to and try it without power armor to see if it'd have worked anyway.

It is possible, of course, that I just hadn't waited long enough, and the door would have opened this time either way.

Honestly, though, just glad to be able to progress!

You'd be surprised. I believe it is the power armor.

I think it's the solution because while in power armor, the game ignores (or does it alter?) the animation required to connect the pipboy to the vault door panel, which ignores whatever check bugged out for him and others, and allows them to proceed.

wtiger, i searched here in the forum. dozens and dozens of threads pulled up with the same problem and all the time the solution that worked for people was to wear power armor. :D

sometimes the solution is to search and see what has worked for people in the past. i'm not saying that waiting wouldn't have worked too, because sure, once the cell resets, it would probably work. but for an immediate solution, it was the power armor

Hasn't for me in my play runs. After more than 3200+ hrs and a min of 20 play runs. But if it helps someone to do that part, then go there with the power armor on and then get out of it before using the vault door with the Pipboy.

Normally, the game will tell you if a action you are trying to do can not be done while in power armor. Such as sleeping. If it has for me at that step in the quest, I certainly do not remember it.

The only reason to go to vault 88 is to get the nuclear material, 100's of units of nuclear material. Pro-Tip: if you scrap the overseer, it doesn't count as a murder.
The only reason to go to vault 81 is to do the Ashes the Cat quest.
Maybe I'm a little jaded, but I'm getting bored with the game.
Go home Ashes the Cat! lol
