You don't assign settlers to jobs by just talking to them.
You need to enter Workshop mode and assign them from there by selecting them and then selecting the appropriate object you wish them to work.
If this isn't working for you, troubleshoot your mods or go back to a save where it DID work.
Reduce the clutter in the settlement. Store or delete radios, interaction points. Restart the game. Leave and return. If that does not work, start removing mods.
had an event in the sunshine tidings co-op, had alot of corn had 40 food in corn there but also some was not being worked, so I found some settlers and assigned them to the unworked corn..
and then watched my food tick down from 40 to 0. then I just reassigned everyone. but yeah it just works. don't get frustrated. its just corn.
It's happened to me on both PS4 and PC versions, both with the first version and the GOTY one, so I don't think it's exclusive to what you play on either. Otherwise I'd just see the settler I tried to assign standing about like a stunned mullet until I've done so. it's not a huge inconvenience, I only wish I'd figured sooner - I accidentally happened upon it when I picked up a resource by mistake and put it back down.
Try that anyway, see if it fixes the issue. Fingers crossed, it works for you. :)
click your cursor/pointer on the settler, make sure you see there base id/ref id
