Companions block your way, shoot you in the back, and don't like what you do half the time. Most companions are very good at finding that albino glowing legendary Epic super-mutant Overlord that you just sneaked by, the one with three Super-mutant suiciders.
The only thing they're good for is that they give the baddies someone else to shoot at.
There is no in between for me.
Also lifeless robots seem to have more personality than any of the supposed "human" characters.
Only difference is that i can't romance them.
Not that i would even want to..
Dog isn't great but it can carry some stuff and you can use lone wanderer with the dog
and its best point is it never says anything.
so i go with Ada. it doesn't bother me when a robot gets killed. she just powers down for a moment then rejoins the fight when she can.
also, ada can be modified as a pack mule so she can carry he fair share of weight.
and one more thing, you can put 2 weapons on ada's arms. not every companion will dual wield miniguns, for example. :D
but really, what companion you take depends on you. some companions offer perks that work with a player's particular play style

Or, it kind of seemed like he could only hit stuff at a very specific range. Too close or too far and he'd constantly miss.
I like Cait, so I usually make my way to Combat Zone early in a game. She does need some kind of automatic rifle/SMG (Defense gun that, somehow, fires incendiary rounds in my current game) to be any good, but once she has that she can be pretty effective.
Cait can also somehow look remarkably offended sometimes while wearing power armor (especially the Vim one from Far Harbor or X-01). Not sure what it is, but it's pretty funny.
Piper is nice, but not much good in a fight in my experience.
Dogmeat drives me nuts, so I usually replace him with Codsworth as soon as possible. Codsworth isn't too shabby as long as he can get close to enemies. And he has a bunch of pretty terrible jokes too, plus you can upgrade him once you get the robot workbench.
I like Ada too, although it's always a problem figuring out which legs to give her; her AI doesn't seem to handle the faster ones very well, so she keeps running into me and past doors and such.
it does depend though on the type of build I am always in sneak but if I am playing a build that is really dependent on sneakiness I will take lone wanderer then run the game with no companion. That is rare though as I do think the companions add to the game plus if you follow their stories you can get some good perks.
i named it Tim-Tom
