Need help! Texture mods not loading
Hello all, I have just done a fresh new install of the game (onto my seperate D: back up drive, not the original main C: drive) and all the texture mods are not working and they were working fine before I did a new install. I have the most recent F4SE and NMM ModOrganizer2. I have changed load order to have them on the bottom and reinstalled multiple times but still nothing. I installed Bethini. and added loose files and updated all the ini. folders manually too just in case, but still comes up the same horrible vanilla looking textures. I have tried using both Luxor8071 and Flaconoil's mods and both will not work, but everything else seems to run fine. On other forums I have read recent similar issues but no real solution is every replied back or the thread is not continued after one or 2 replies of steps already taken. Is anyone else having this issue? Did Bugthesda come out with another update that blocks all textures out of jealousy of the modding community that is able to make better textures than their early 2000's ones?

Check the file dates on the vanilla files. It can be that when these are newer then loose files do not load. I am not exactly sure why or how this is, and use a mod manager myself that keeps this checked (Vortex), but it is a known issue.

The file dates are the same day yesterday, times are different though, vanilla is early in day and texture mod files are later in day

Did you change any of the .ini parameters or did the game overwrite some of your old configuration by any chance?

I remember settings such as:
bEnableFileSelection=1
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
bForceUpdateDiffuseOnly=0
iTextureDegradeDistance0=1600
iTextureDegradeDistance1=3000
iTextureUpgradeDistance0=1200
iTextureUpgradeDistance1=2400

A clarification - NMM is nexus mod manager, a completely different app to MO2.

Assuming that you are using MO2 -

Check the file directories in use by the new MO2. Check that everything points to the new location.

If you copied the old MO2 across there is a chance that the new MO2 still points at the old directories, or some new and some old. This happened to me once. Look under the last menu icon at the Paths tab.

Sorry, my mistake, I assumed NMM and MO2 were one in the same. I am using NMM (0.71.73). Not sure if this one has been updated but I just downloaded it. Maybe MO2 might work better than NMM and that might be the issue

The most recent .ini changes I have tried were from the more recent threads of modding (2019-2020) and is on the Nexus mod manager install page, they claim the only change the .ini requires these days are

[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=

slightly offtopic but very important
NMM = nexus mod manager, it is no longer supported and overall is a terrible modmanager barely a step over manual modding
Vortex = a noob friendly modmanager, it is currently nexus official mod manager
MO2 = Mod organizer2, this one is a bit harder to learn at start but in the long run it is the best modorganizer if you want total control

I will give MO2 a shot since it has a most recent update of last month, do you know if I will have to re-download or re-install all my mods or can they just be moved over from NMM to MO2 folder?

i would suggest nuking your fallout install before using either vortex or MO2

MO2 does not add anything to the data folder but the game will be very much affected by what is in the datafolder

Dang! So a complete install of FO4 and a complete re-download of all the mods?? If so there goes another 2 days of download work and fine tuning on CBBE sliders, lol!

Will give it a shot, thank you all for the assistance

Well, I uninstalled FO4, NMM, F4SE, and all mods (even some old files of vortex and mods that was taking up over 60 GB all this time that I didn't know about that were hidden). I then reinstalled FO4, MO2, F4SE, all the mods again, and setup all the .ini files with beth.ini and am still unable to get the various texture mods to work. I also made sure to put the textures on lowest order but still no go. Is any one else with a fresh install having this same issue?

Hey, it's been awhile but I've just wanted to comment in case you didn't find a solution or somebody else will stuble upon this thread.
If you're launching the game via MO2, it is using custom .ini files, actually disregarding any .inis that are located in the game folder.
In MO2, check out Tools > Tool Plugins > Ini editor, and then edit Fallout4Custom.ini:
[Archive] bInvalidateOlderFiles=1 sResourceDataDirsFinal=

if that doesnt help, maybe try also editing Fallout4Prefs.ini:
[Launcher] bEnableFileSelection=1

That should do it.

While This won't help you now , These days I keep all game files ( mods , What to do to make a modded game work . game settings ) on a separate flash drive . I've been hacked several times and quite a few hard drive failures and now I once my laptop's been ''repaired'' it now around 7 hours to get the game going .
