You wouldn't have a quest marker taht says "hey man your son is here, just go kill some raiders around(red markers) and free him"
That's what the game is about
It's about exploration and side quests
What did you expect?
A 100 hours long action packed shooter with intense story or what?
It's impossible in fallout's universe
Far cry series is about action and long story, fallout is about exploration and huge amount of hidden side quests
Honestly I went into exploration and side quests so much that I haven't visited Diamond city after 80+ hours of gameplay...But the good side is that my character got a lot of new friends, became the general of minutemen and found a good partner
Main story gotta wait a bit,I need to save the world first :D
I have played over 800 hours of the game and still haven't finished the main story line (I'm in that part that we need to kill a courser to get entry to the institute, and I am out of side quests (nuka world and far harbor included), so I guess my next step would be to do the main plot :P
So, to me, playing the side games was very enjoying. The little I played from the main plot though was amazing, so your mileage may vary. If you hate so much the game story, maybe you should move to the next one.

My view is that the game is only worth playing with mods. The plot is unchanged but few people play the plots in these games more than once or twice. (I usually stop at killing Kellogg as revenge plus being told that the baby has grown up and is happy.)
Mods add extra stuff. For example npc's who talk to you and have their own side-quests, more than 1 follower, proper settlements that grow and are populated by people with names, green overgrown landscapes, improved enemies, more realistic game mechanisms and so on. If you like sandboxing then modding is the way to go. Otherwise play something like AC Valhalla.
But I like to role play my character "seriously", at least in a first run of a game. And in this game the character motivation is so fixed that the only way for me to play it was to go with that. The thing is, as a parent the story is actually really compelling at first, but it is like they dropped the seriousness of it and just "finished writing". But the fact that she actually finds clues is suprising. We sort of learn that Shaun has lead her with hints, instead of just going there and fetching his mother safely. So weird. And the speech wheel is so limited that many times what I thought was my answer, turned out to be the opposite. All of a sudden I´m in a faction, and bridges burned behind me. Like a trap. Many times what one says isn´t even written out. Just "Sarcastic" or part of a sentence that could mean anything.
I really wanted to feel serious about it, putting myself in the characters position, but after reaching the end I now will go back to my safety-save and just ditch the Institute, ditch the Railroad (Wow what a mess, "die for any synth"? like the RR would die for a courser? the speech option isn´t even there...) ditch the BoS and just be reckless. I find that to be the most logical reaction by the character, traumatized and jaded after finding shaun in that way. So now I will go out with my trusty sledgehammer (which already at level 15 is almost OP) and just be generally dangerous :)
FO4 is much more than just the main story, which actually compared to the amount of other content that is available, is rather short. But that does not make the main plot bad. For myself. It's kind of like art or music. What some think is great, I think sucks.
+1
I think this is the best way to enjoy this game. Even after all the playthroughs I've done, vanilla and modded, I'm still discovering new things as I go along. Just like in Skyrim, the game world is rich environment waiting to be explored. If you just concentrate on the story line, you're missing 90% of the game.
"My pistol has magic! pew pew pew!" xD
*rolls a dice*
*rolls a "1"*
I'm shocked! oO
