(or select an alternate version), other than backing up the old game.
You can force an update by opening the game properties (right click the game in your Library) go to the "Local Files" tab, then select "Verify Integrity of Game Cache".
Your F4SE is out of date.
Go back to the F4SE website.
Download F4SE from the archive.
The link on main page probably aint newest version because your cookies/cache is wrong.
Steam -> Settings -> Downloads -> Clear Download Cache
Then try to Verify the Game Files again. If that doesn't work then submit a ticket to Steam becuase you messed something up.
He pasted an outdated F4SE error message....

The screenshot is even showing today's Creation Club update.
I have no idea where either of you are getting your version numbers from. One of you is saying 1.9.4 which is really old and the other is saying 1.10.40 which dont even exist yet.
Also if you had gone to the F4SE archive page you could have found an F4SE that would work for version 1.9whatever. However MCM would then tell you that your F4SE is the wrong version.
I dont even understand how your game is out of date in the first place since you have three Steam update options all of which require the update before launching. Oh wait....
Which let me guess, you are NOT launching through Steam at all (and have it set to only update on launch) because you are using F4SE.
It's most likely he's using an outdated F4SE/ MCM, but he asked how to update the game. If not this then he's done something to his Steam client, or this post is just bait.

Seriously? Why would I need to lie about what version the game is on?
You can see the version number in the screenshot....along with TODAY's CC message.
Why does my version number in the screenshot match the version MCM is requesting from him?
You do realize it was YOU that said 1.10.40 was the current version....
Yet now you are saying that 1.10.40 is from 2017. So why were you telling someone that that was the current version?
https://bethesda.net/en/devnotes
Shows 1.10.80 is the latest update in April 2018. Which is wrong because there was an update in June that knocked the F4SE out of synch.
I think you are REALLY confused about version numbers. Especially when you are providing links over a year old.
As I said, most likely the OP does not have automatic updates on and is not launching through Steam to force the update (since the op uses F4SE.)
I think you should go start your game and check your version number yourself.
