Fallout 4: Sound in opening animation, no sound in menu/game
Fallout New Vegas: fine
Dark Souls 3: fine
XCOM 2: fine
Bayonetta: no sound at all
Transformers Devastation: used to have sound in menu, nothing in game- now fine
Non-Steam games like Minecraft are fine too, although I have an old Star Trek turn-based game called Birth of the Federation that *sometimes* starts without sound and I have to close it and open it again to get sound working. Sadly restarting it doesn't help with Fallout 4.
I think it's because I play on a TV through HDMI and some games keep trying to switch to a set of PC speakers that aren't there, but I could be wrong. I've checked in Device Manager and the TV (Philips FTV) is the only listed audio device.
I tried updating my graphics card drivers (AMD Radeon 5700 XT, now with driver version 214.1) and restarting my machine, which worked! I had sound in game last night! Turned it on again today and... back to silence after the opening animation.
I'm using Windows 10 Home version 20H2. Does anyone have any idea what's wrong?
EDIT: Forgot to mention, when I play something on Netflix or Disney+, the sound cuts out after a second until I click on the progress bar, which seems to reset the sound. I also have no sound in Steam preview videos in the store.
Also check that you are using 16- or 24-bit at 48kHz as output format for your audio device. This appears to be another common audio issue. Combined with the above, meaning, to switch audio devices while a game is running and the devices having different sample rates is bound to mess up some games.
