How to unload fat man

Is there a way to take the nuke out of a fat man? I don't need the weapon but I'd like the ammo.

Pull the trigger. It unloads it into any direction you want!

I am not aware of any special circumstances with the Fat Man, but usually when one moves ammo from the inventory into a container will this empty a weapon's magazine.

If you like the ammo then find Super Mutants and headshot the one with the mini-nuke. It will then be on the suicider's corpse.

Yup. That works. I think the problem is that I was assuming a Fat Man you found would come loaded. So I was trying to unload an empty weapon.
