Sometimes the most obvious solution is the most overlooked :)

I'm not sure what you mean "audio refuses to mute"
That's not how volume settings work ..
Once it's 0 it's muted.

Are you moving the volume control down for just the music or the overall game volume?

I turned down the music volume and it worked fine for me.

Also, you may try turning your sound system down. I use speakers which have a master volume control on the one speaker and is easy to turn it down.

Can you be more specific than "ear rape" or is your vocabulary this limited that you cannot express yourself any better?

Check your audio settings that you are using 24bit at 48,000Hz.

In Windows 10 is it a bit tedious to find it, try:

Settings -> Sound -> Device Settings for your Speakers -> Additional Properties -> Advanced

The thing you hear is called a sound distortion. Try changing the audio formats, see if any other will work. Update your audio drivers and perhaps try to get the manufacturer's driver and avoid the ones that come Windows, because these can sometimes be outdated.

If it still does not play the sound correctly could you try installing the Windows Media Pack, which Microsoft has excluded from some versions of Windows and therefore needs to be installed manually.
