fashion advice?

i wanna do like a sea catain look, so the sea captain is a must, but im not sure about the body gear. any recomendations on things that pair well with the hat?

Minutemen General's outfit with the Lt's hat from the USS Constitution quest. That would give a reasonable facsimile of a 18th/19th century look.

At least he is wearing socks. I can easily imagine finding socks without holes in them under those conditions of the wasteland being a very common issue. Look at all the holes in the other garments NPC's wear.

And yes, I give Longfellow a Sea Captain's hat. It really does fit his char.

Answer is obvious, sea captain hat and submariner uniform.

But you can always go naked, just with the hat. create your own fashion line!!

If you don´t have the Luitenant or submariner outfit; I currently dress the guards of Nordhagen Beach and Warwick farm in a ´coast guard´ uniform; using the coast guard and sea captain hats in combination with the Surveyor Outfit.

Eventually I plan on getting them the Dark-Blue BoS captain outfit, but that is going to take a lot of pickpocketing... :-)

The CC Vault Suit dlc, you can color the vault suits black or several other colors. Then put other armor over the top of them. And besides the base Vault suit, there is also the Utility one, which has a little more stuff on the suit. But those will not accept other armor on top of them.
