How do supply lines work?
I started making supply lines. My false understanding is that if there is a supply line between settlements, the workbenches share common inventory. My plan was to build robots, assign them to Supply the next settlement, and then go to that settlement and build another robot until all the settlements were hooked up.
Well, that's wrong e.g. Sanctuary has 250+ rubber, and Red Rocket has only 7. I thought maybe it was only connected to settlements with a direct supply line, but there's only one supply line!
Please explain supply lines or tell me my game is glitched.

They do not share inventory. But you can build things and if you do not have enough locally it will use things out of the linked workbench. So if you built something that rtequired 8 rubber at RR, it would use the 7 from there and use 1 from Sanctuary

You can't 'access and take' any item from other settlements.

But when you 'craft or build' something workbenches can use materials from connected settlements inventories.

example; you have razorgrain on a settlement and dirty water on another, so you can cook a noodle cup in another settlement. by using ingredients remotely (but you can not take razorgrain or dirty water from there)

same thing is valid for building things, junks can be used in the same way.

So, the robot workbench isn't one of those "workbenches" with this capability?

No they should share inventory for building and for the robot workbench. If you ran directly from Sanctuary to Red Rocket and tried to immediately build a new robot, it probably just didn't update yet. Trying leaving and coming back.

If there is still a problem might be a bug.

what i do is use sanctury, i break all items manually. they go into that work bench.

Settlement inventory is not pooled together (many mods do that) it just links them to draw from another when it runs out.

In other words, supply lines do not work like a universal stash box that has the same inventory no matter where in a game world you use it.

Quite a few supply line mods can make it so you can designate a "master workbench" and all items from all supply line connected workbenches are moved to that workbench every few minutes. The first and most popular mod is idex logistics.

To put it simplisticly.

if you are building something and do not have a needed material in workbench b and have a supply line connecting workbench b to workbench a and a has the material it will pull that material from workbench a.

It will not however allow you to open the inventory of workbench b and manually pull an item from the inventory of workbench a.

The settlement system is supposed to allow settlers to get needed water and food through the supply lines as well. For example if there was a supply from RR to Abernathy Farm and the farm had enough extra food/water then RR would not show food/water in the red simply because none is being produced there.

That's what I was trying to do tho. I had tons of junk in Sanctuary, and I made a Robot in Sanctuary to link a supply line to Red Rocket, thinking I could draw on the material in Sanctuary's workbench to make a robot at Red Rocket who would link to the next settlement. Nope.
The game probably hates me and does this just to me because right now I don't see any point to supply lines at all.

all active settlements should be linked with supply lines when you are able.

settlers gathering resources at a settlement, you can craft stuff at any linked settlement from everyone gathering stuff, like items you make from food, water, etc.

Settlers who eat or need water can draw directly from other settlements if needed to help keep them happy.

You can build up new settlements that are linked without having to carry resources back and forth.. so found a new settlement, go link up a supply line, then you can build up walls and defenses and such at the new place without needing to gather up the material.

They are useful, link them up.

Okay, well. I'm not smart enough to get supply lines to work. I've spent most of the day trying to get a stupid router to work and then some stupid Fallout 4 mods and I've decided that "Keep It Simple, Stupid" are words to live by.

Really shouldn't be that hard. Get Local Leader rank 1, assign a settler or robot as a provisoner to another settlement. That should link those settlements inventory for the purposes of fulfilling settlers needs, crafting something in build mode, or crafting/upgrading something on a workbench (including the robot workbench). You'll never see those linked items when looking in a workshop or workbench, but they should appear once you actually try to build something.

If it isn't working like that and you have mods, one of the mods is likely causing a problem. If you don't have mods, you can try verifying files through Steam. It may help.

Kay. I'll try it without mods. You know, many mods are just not up to expectations, or sometimes the mod maker knows how to make it work in his/her head but doesn't realize that their instructions are ambiguous.
I just spent 2 hours trying to build railings around the stairs in the atrium of my vault 88. I'm ready to stop playing this is go do something else. The game itself is full of insults and frustrations.

Place Everywhere. Use the F1 and F2 options to turn off object and surface snapping and you can place anything anywhere.
