Highlight doesn't always follow mouse cursor, and tab doesn't always open pipboy
Since I installed the game (first playthrough had no mods, second playthrough has about 20), the highlight doesn't always follow the mouse, for example I click on a town on the map, and get the menu to mark it or fast travel. I can point to an option with the mouse, but if the highlight hasn't moved, it activates the wrong one. Same thing happens when picking a weapon etc. I have to wiggle the mouse first to make the highlight notice the mouse has moved.

And more recently it's started not going into the pipboy when I press tab. Only way to wake it up is to press esc twice.

Is this a known bug or just my setup?

There may be a hardware fault with the mouse and wireless mice do have problems when the battery runs down. Check that you have up to date drivers for your mouse but in Fallout4Prefs.ini change or add the following lines

iPresentInterval=0
bForceIgnoreSmoothness=1

there is a known issue for mouse lag but there is another for double cursor but you would see things disappear and reappear as you move the mouse

It's a simple optical corded mouse. It works fine in everything else, and the cursor moves in the game (the green arrow), but the highlight of which item in a menu doesn't always follow it. I can click the third item in the list, but it activates the second one as the highlight remains there. I just tried to get a screenshot and typically it's working just now. It's very random. I don't have a double cursor. So is the known issue for mouse lag what I'm seeing with menus? Is this a game bug? Can I fix it?

A mouse issue won't explain why the tab key isn't working right. I'd lean towards your game possibly being considered in the background by your PC or something of that nature. Have you been alt-tabbing or hitting the windows key to multitask while you wait on loading screens?

I find that sometimes when I do that, it behaves like the game is half in the background, half up front. I can see the Windows cursor over the Fallout cursor, and they don't always line up right. That's something that could mess key presses up too, if Windows is applying your key press to your desktop instead of Fallout.

Nameless makes a good point.

Check that you running in full screen and not windowed. Windowed games normally use Alt+Enter to become top on the Z-order

I forget what I did, but I had to do it to make it work. I have a 4:3 monitor (1600*1200) and Fallout 4 doesn't like non-widescreen monitors (like we all have them or something? I avoid them like the plague). I had to edit an ini file a long time ago when I installed the game, or it played in a horrid low resolution like 800*600. I remember having to change to or from windowed mode, and having to set it to one pixel more than my monitor width to fool it somehow. I've also got 5 monitors, one with the game on and others without. I can move the mouse cursor outside the game onto another monitor in certain circumstances - if I'm using the mouse to aim etc or running around, then the mouse moves the weapon or character. If I'm in the pipboy so I have the fallout 4 mouse cursor, if I go off the edge of the game I can click in other Windows programs. All the above probably confuses the mouse-game interface.

But that doesn't explain the faulty tab key. I run out of ammo, need to change gun, need to take a stimpak etc, hammer the tab key and get shot, it's irritating to die you know.

I am assuming that you have your controller and rumble switched off as these interfere with mouse and keyboard.

I got a cheap wired USB keyboard and a cheap wired USB mouse. Nothing fancy, no gaming stuff.

No I meant in the option menus, the game defaults to put Xbox controller on so you have to switch it off and disable the rumble.
My mouse and keyboard cost £15.00 but my rig cost £4600... I once spent £100 on a top line gaming mouse and after 2 weeks I put it on ebay so never think you need better

Hi Bud, you posed a question about Ivy on another page, just in case you missed it I out the answer here. The site is not recommended here but the size directs you to google

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1m9VkensaoHFOAafcDhY41HD2NoC__L8S

Download with magazines as there is another quest to get the displays but when you first meet, she will ask you questions. If you want the full character answer the top one twice, you can change later but it is the closest I have found to a proper AI follower.

Enjoy :)

How do I meet her? Nevermind, found her. Found some instructions and got her at sanctuary.

£4600! Wow, I made a computer for £2500 once (excluding the 6 monitors) for someone training to fly British Airways. I thought that was absurd. Mine is a £420 Ryzen 9 3900XT in a £70 MB, with an £70 2nd hand R9 280X GPU. Will be getting a better GPU (probably £600 worth) to go with the £1200 55" monitor.

I had controller off and vibration on in the menu. I've turned vibration off as I don't have a thing which vibrates ;-)

It could be one or more of the mods is script heavy causing lag or a delay in their execution.

I had an instance in a playthrough sometime back where the delay was so long it would not even open a trade window with a settler until I was halfway to another settlement.

The main things that cost me were the 2xGTX1080 sli and the motherboard ASUS® RAMPAGE V EDITION 10: E-ATX. The mother board enabled liquid cooling and 9 main fans so I can OC by 30-40% without exceeding 44 degrees C. so my I7-6900 can be taken from 3.2ghz to 4.4 very easily and the fastest I have hit is 4.94ghz before getting to 60 degrees.

It sounds good but to be honest, I have an old Pentium 4 PC which I use for older games like Skyrim which looks absolutely fantastic on it but on my specially built PC, it cannot run properly. It is perfect on VR though and can run 4k at 60fps without a single hiccup

It doesn't seem to be a lag. It's the game doesn't acknowledge the movement of the cursor in a menu. Yet the cursor is displayed correctly and moves with the mouse always. But the highlight sometimes doesn't.

What has the motherboard to do with liquid cooling?

I've never been successful with overclocking, I sometimes get maybe 10-15%, but then something crashes and I corrupt the system disk. So I decided it isn't worth the effort.

I take it the older games object to the newer OS? I've had problems with some older games with Windows 10. Random crashes or not accessing saved games etc properly as the folders have moved for such things in Windows 10.

Damnit! My chair has broken. The hydraulic thingy keeps leaking or something, I am sinking! Just when I thought my car MOT was the most annoying thing ever. Cowboy garages.... I've just reported him to the DVLA. He claims my handbrake isn't working well enough, despite it having every single brake component replaced brand new professionally, and I can do a handbrake turn with it. How can a handbrake locking the wheels not be good enough?
