It is all done in your settlement with Workshop. It is not something where you go into the wilderness and drag back a sedated animal.
Small cages
Cat, Dog, Mole rat, Mutant hound.
Medium cages
Feral ghoul, Gunner, bloatfly, bloodbug, radroach, stingwing, Raider, Super mutant,
Large cages
Brahmin, Deathclaw, Mirelurk, Radscorpion, Radstag, Yao guai
The type depends on your level and is random
The wiki took a nosedive in quality as of Fallout 4, many things are missing and many things are wrong or misleading.
I blame the vault/nukapidia merger into one wiki for that
Creatures from the DLC's will not spawn in the regular cages, you need mods to enable that.
So a Deathclaw Cage will bring Deathclaws, nothing more.
Cages have a high chance to bring a creature that is above your level. So when building Yan-gao Cages and others, you should be well prepared. Also the Legendary versions may come.

Tell me if i missed a cage.
I know how cages work, bruh.
Thank you
Edit: Also, i KNEW i could catch glowing ones! I just have absolute ♥♥♥♥ luck i guess
No problem ^^
For the glowing ones does the cage need to be opened during a rad storm or something? I keep loading and reopening the ghoul cage but i still havent got any glowing ones, and im trying to get a putrid glowing one for....research....and by research i mean i want it as a pet.
Looking at the leveled lists and level numbers for each entry.
I think its not entirely random. Its just like with the Machinegun Turret variants that you build.
The encounter zone level needs to be high enough for certain types to spawn.
Meaning if a settlement where you made the cage is locked way below the level that the Glowing one's leveled NPC entry has. They won't be as common catch as the other lower level types.
(Ever noticed that the Workshop built Machinegun Turret sometimes has explosive ammo and other times just regular or incendiary? That's the reason.)
Weird, since i did get a mythic deathclaw on my first try, and when i was trying to get the far harbors mirelurk ( not knowing i couldnt ) i got a glowing mirelurk king, then an albino mirelurk hunter.
So what are some of the highest leveled settlements? Keep in mind i did the minutemen and railroad routes so anything that requires i side with the brotherhood or institute is out.
And are you sure i cant get nukalurks or bloodrage mirelurks? not even if i make the cages in nuka world/far harbor?
The way it works they will still spawn but not as commonly. Or else you would never encounter Charred Ghouls in the wild for example.
You know even on very high zone level on my modified run (where i made all encounter zones minimum levels much higher than before) I had troubles getting Mythic Deathclaws and Deathskull Radscorpions from cages. Still got them eventually. And Ghoul cages gave me Charred ones like majority of the time before i got a Glowing one.
While not entirely random it still cycles through the list of creatures so you may or may not get what you want so easily.
Off the top of my head Murkwater Construction Site , Nuka Red Rocket , Spectacle Island and their sorroundings have pretty high zone level cap.
Yes i am sure . These creatures are not on the list of spawnable creatuers by these cages.
Like i mentioned before the cages work of a script uses leveled list for what creature can spawn in them.
On a side note. There is one thing that puzzles me.
Is the fact that apparently in Raider cage Hancock can spawn.
But i don't see how is that possible when looking at what's in the entries. Or ever encountered this myself.
Yet i've seen a video of that but assumed it was modded. Then some time later my buddy mentioned he had this funny encounter when using Raider cages.
But probably i've missed something hmm.
Nexus has a mod that does it but not in the base game
Eh i have bad experiences with nexus mods for fallout 4. Mostly with them being abandoned and not working.
Hancock was probably on jet again
