Do ghouls need to eat?

So we have a ghoul kid stuck in a fridge for 200 years. Non-working fridge, I might add. I doubt the casserole lasted that long. We have feral ghouls trapped in buildings from which they can't possibly have been escaping to secure a food supply. We have food supplies in these buildings which aren't locked up and which have not been consumed despite the presence of ferals.

On the other hand, we have the Duty or Dishonor Brotherhood quest, in which Initiate Clarke steals food to feed the ferals, they eat the food, they fight over the food, and they get violent when they can't access the food, demonstrating that they do eat.

I'm detecting a little bit of inconsistency here. Do they actually need food, or not? Do they just eat people because they feel hungry, but survive just fine on radiation even when there's no food? What's the deal here?

i think it depends.

If you're still a non feral sane ghoul they need to eat like people. As seen in the ghouls that run the bars and stores and the ghoul inside the rocket facility in new vegas where when asked how he made it he says "I'm not proud of it but I ate radroaches to survive".

feral ghouls imo are like literal zombies. They sleep and just basically be dead shut down to avoid moving and only go towards a moving person or thing when somethings near enough to avoid using energy.

The overseer though you see food for her never small dog bowls or bowls for her feral ghoul occupants.

Also the whole scrapped idea of the original fallouts in 2D bird's eye view that they would've had ghoul babies and ghouls would reproduce.



I wanna say them NEEDING to eat isn't cannon. They do if they can but if not they just wander around endlessly or just sleep until you kick a can by accident.

You have people like Eddie winter too who are just in a bunker. I doubt highly that 200 years+ without food resupplies or water would affect him much. He's still able to fight and his bunker has never ever been opened until you find the tapes to the access code.



like there's nothing with ghouls, feral, that shows that they need to eat to survive. I could be wrong though since you find tons of dead ghouls all around the commonwealth.

I think it's left to chance unlike super mutants who eat people and anything else they can kill even each other. You see all those meat bags around their compounds and strong even gives you meats he pulls randomly out of his ass from nowhere.

What are you talking about, bethesda is very good with lore with only a few instances such as this. Adding to lore doesnt mean it's not cannon, fo4 power armor is Canon because nothing in lore contradicts it. Super mutant dogs aren't lore breaking because nothing contradits it. Billy the kid DOES contradict established lore. Don't get me started on how many times obsidian has broke lore

Imo they should've added somewhere a mini terminal entry or small scene where you see a ghoul starve to death or have some wandering around that starve and die. I know we see some eating people or each other but never see them just die from not eating.

the whole place he was in was a food storage.


but yeah. Seems the ghouls probably died from something else then that you find dead. They died fresh too since they're not skeletons yet.

oh there's also the slave ghouls used by the enclave in fallout 2. They've got basically no food or water and just work them to death.

Why would ghouls need to frequently eat/drink/sleep/breath if their metabolism is slow enough to let them survive for more than 200 years? You would expect them to only do so when storing nutrients for long periods of time.

About the ferals, isnt it just the dopamines kicking in when you eat something tasty?
