The Gauss Rifle

Just got my first gauss rifle at level 35, and I can see right away that I'm going to have to plant some new water purifiers. 17 caps per shot! That must be the most expensive ammo in the game. Still it is super powerful. I got the gun new, and it was putting out around 250 damage per shot. With the few upgrades available to me at gun nut 3 and science 3 I have it up to over 350 damage per shot.

It's strange that I can only hang a short scope on it at level 3 gun nut. At level 1 I think I could put a recon scope on a pipegun. Guess the notches are harder to make or the screws require microscopic screwdrivers--or something. In a few more levels I'll have gun nut 4, and this should be the ultimate sniper rifle. It will be extremely heavy, so if I want to stick to my limit of one rifle and a pistol, I'm going to have to knock that long barrel off my combat shotgun and go with a short barrel that I could conceivably carry as a pistol.

I think I'm going to hone down to just Last Minute, a maximised laser rifle for close work, and my silenced advanced 10mm pistol for not attracting attention.

I don't have a suppressor for the Last Minute, As I think you know, I never take Gun Nut (or Science or Armorer) just to craft. So I'm checking all the shops and all the drops but no gauss silencer yet.

(I'm not sure how you would silence a hypersonic projectile anyway.)

I got the skill at gun nut level 4. As far as I know you can't buy a gauss rifle silencer anywhere. This "last minute" you're talking about, I did old guns at least once, but I don't remember finding a legendary 2 shot gauss rifle when I had finished.

It's really weird. It seems the longer I carry the GR the higher level the critters I've been running into. The feral ghouls at the 4 leaf fish packing plant seemed to be almost unaffected by my souped up laser "pistol". I ended up using the gauss rifle on most of them. Otherwise I was running through a bunch of jet really quickly. Fortunately I always carry a load of around 30 jet and jet derivatives.

Those super mutants at Big Johns were coming fast and furious. I ended up using 2 refreshing beverages just to avoid getting killed quickly. In addition to the legendary master there was at least one other master, several others with high ranking sounding names and the big guy with the red skull next to his name. I didn't stay because there were still others left and I was afraid my X-01 armor was getting badly damaged. It wasn't, but one piece was down to 50 percent.

This time I let a couple of waves of BoS airships knock themselves out against Big Johns before I waded in to mop up.

Compared to the time I stumbled into the middle of it at night, that was carnage, they handed me my hood ornaments that time.

Funny it was getting dark when I reached Big John's this time. I had completely forgotten it was there, and was just walking to the fish packing place from Diamond City. If I hadn't been wearing my X-01 power armor I think they would have scrapped my behind too. So, how much damage do you get out of "Last Minute" per shot?

At the moment my Last Minute is doing 600 DMG a shot, if I have good adrenaline going or pop a Psycho. That's with 4 or 5 ranks in Rifleman.

Jeez if I could get a silencer on it, I would also get the Sandman bonus which would be very nice.

sorry my bad, the Last Minute is Crippling, not Two-Shot. If you can find a Two Shot then you just found the best weapon in the game.

So I guess my Last Minute at 600 DMG is doing 900 DMG if I hit a limb. Which apparently includes the head.

Damn, I'm not even getting 400 out of my regular gauss rifle. I'm at rifleman 4. If I get to level 5 it might get up to 400. I haven't checked it at adrenaline yet. Apparently it averages LESS when that is flowing. Because I end up missing so many shots when I'm all pumped up.

Still want to check it on a Queen Mirelurk. So, i guess it's about time to swim over to Spectacle Island. Shaun wants me to go kick butt at Bunker Hill, but Shaun can wait. Funny him sending his poor mother into so many all out slaughters.

Instigating is better than 2 shot asuming your running a stealth sniper build. with the double damage on the first shot for undetected targets, the damage boost from sandman for a silenced weapon and the best parts it will one shot any none modded enemy in the game

Thing is, how do you know an enemy is at full health when you open fire on him. The game my say, "He stubbed his toe an hour before the gunfight started and lost 5 hit points."

if you wanna save up just use the lazer muskets. With a double shot or extra damage and a 6 crank you can outperform a standard Gauss Rifle until you have enough caps or ammo to use it extensively.

Eleven shots. The mirelurk queen took 11 shots from my gauss rifle before she died. However, I wouldn't swear they all hit her. She started moving around quite a bit, and I may have missed her a few. She had a hunter with her, and he dropped with one shot. By then my adrenaline must have been pretty high.

I don't like the laser muskets. It takes all day to crank them up, and then, half the time, I miss. I wish they'd intro a 20 millimeter cannon as a ballistic weapon. It would weigh around 40 pounds, and each shot would mass about 3 ounces. But it should do even more damage than the gauss rifle.

Speaking of which why do they still call it the gauss rifle. I thought everything was metric now. They should call it the Weber gun.

I'd have thought in survival the large amount of ammunition they consume would also be a problem.

Not sure how Instigating can ever be better than Two Shot? Instigating is like Poor Man's Two Shot. I mean it's great but it's not as great as Two Shot.

Instigating is Two Shot on your first hit on an unwounded target. Two Shot is double DMG on *every* shot.
