My fallout 4 crashes during character creation
Hi, so I'm new to PC gaming. I switched from Xbox to PC about a month ago. I modded fallout 4 on Xbox so generally speaking I know the risk of using mods and know how to set up my load order etc. However an issue has arose that literally makes it to where I cannot play the game.

So I hit new it loads fairly quickly and i start to customize my character, after a minute or so it will crash to my desc top. It won't sit there for a minute or two frozen, it doesn't tell me "Fallout4.exe has stopped working" its just instant CTD.

I use Vortex for mods, so I disabled all of the mods there and It still doesn't work. Mind you That means that I still have f4se installed because I installed it manually. It should be installed right as I followed a guide, and the game doesn't work regardless of what launcher I use (Fallout4.exe and f4selauncher.exe)

If anybody knows how to fix this or even what the problem may be I'd really appreciate the help.

F4SE doesn't affect the game but is used for mods so won't be any issue.

What PC specs do you have?

I had it built by a friend, and all I'm entirely certain of is that its able to play most games at medium-high settings.

Though I do know my graphics card is a gtx 960

Well you may want to check on what CPU you have, how much RAM, etc just for future reference. Always good things to know.

Beyond that it could very easily be a mod issue. Even if you think you got a good load order you may not. When you start modding the best thing to do is go slow and careful unless you are using a specific step by step guide that has been tested.

Honestly it sounds like it is a mod issue. You can try posting the mod list here to see if we can spot a known issue that could cause this crash. I'd probably just take this as a learning experience and nuke Fallout 4 completely and do a 100% fresh download and find either a good guide to follow or go slow and careful. Download, install, test.

Ok, my mod list is very light compared to my full on 150 mod lists from console. However I have no idea how to install mods such as cbbe or generally more complex mods, it just doesn't work. I also have a mod called thicker beards that I downloaded on an external site as it was removed from the nexus. it doesn't seem to be that though as Iv'e tested entirely fresh games on a different PC and it doesn't crash the game. Seeing as I don't have the time to test every individual mod I'll just go ahead and do a fresh reinstall of fallout 4.

Thanks for the advice.

If you are a novice I'd suggest Vortex. Lots of support for Mod Organizer 2 and such but I think for someone who is brand new to it you will find Vortex much easier. Also suggest you look up GamerPoets on youtube. Here you go https://www.youtube.com/user/gamerpoets

He has literal step by step tutorials for setting up and modding every Bethesda game, their mod tools, and most of the top third party mods. I think it'll help you.

One thing also I would advise, is to check the date of last modified. A lot of mods are discontinued as they had faults that couldn't be rectified. Likewise some are out of date for the updates that took place. Always read what the mod requires, has a conflict with and the instructions for installing and uninstalling.

As an example, with Vortex you can see the date you installed so if you have an issue but last week it was okay, you can always narrow your search for just showing the last 7 days

Well if it crashes during character build then it is a body mod. Some mods expand and add more choices but some will overwrite the originals. If the originals are overwritten then these are permanent changes until the files are reset to original via Steam verification of local files.

The answer with mods is to read, read and read again. For example 3rd person beard fix v1 was discontinued in 2016 and if you look at the posts, it shows that it is incompatible with hair mods so to have thicker beards and Unlock all hairstyles dlc immediately puts a red flag up. That took me about 10 minutes to find as I have never installed any of those.

Remove all of you mods and verify you local files or ideally, remove everything and re-install the game. Make sure it works then add mods 2 at a time until you have a stable platform to work from

I just wanted to make an update for everyone who was kind enough to help me. It turns out my face texture mod was the culprit. Don't ask me why I have no idea, I'm going to be switching to Valkyries face textures as I used those on console.

No worries Bud, glad you found your problem. Happy gaming:steamthumbsup:
