the most likely reason is your audio device is powering off and thus is no longer detected by windows when your pc goes to screen save. F4, much like many older games does not like audio device switching. Its a flaw in the engine.

so its a product of the crap engine with no fix then?

You could just as easily say its a product of your crap computer losing its connection to its audio device. I'd be hesitant to judge when its an issue most people will never face.

You CAN fix it however. Figure out which power setting is cutting off your sound device and disable it.

Or to put it another way, while they "could" have added a feature that would negate this, no developer is going to anticipate you changing "hardware configurations" WHILE playing the game heh.

You can just as easily blame this on windows itself, since IT is the one that changes the audio device when it "loses" whichever one you are using and THAT is what causes the issue with the game, rather than the game itself. For all intents and purposes the game is still sending the audio down the same paths that it was "told" to. Windows just changed the paths so now those paths dont lead anywhere.

My rig is 11 years old and still runs games at max settings almost flawlessly despite being an 11 year old prototype of a prototype hand me down piece of junk

Some people have sound conflicts when using onboard audio but have HDMI audio enabled. Disable HDMI audio in Control Panel Devices (by Connection so you know it's the GPU audio setting). Also, when screensaver is on, it gains focus, do you know how to get focus back for the game ?
