Must have mods?
Haven’t done much modding on this game yet. What mods do you regularly install? And why? I have installed apocalyptic Commonwealth and a couple of minor mods so far.

There is really only one serious "must have"-mod in my opinion and it is the Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch. Its entire purpose is to solve as many issues as possible while otherwise not changing anything of the original experience.

Then there are many mods that are "must have" for many, but not necessarily for everyone. For me are these mods that still leave me with the vanilla game, but solve more complex issues which go beyond the Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch:

TOP - the Texture Optimisation Project, which improves performance with little to no loss in quality.
FAR - a mod to improve distant textures and also to make the game run faster with little to no loss in quality.
Bilago's Launcher - a Fallout 4 launcher app that gives easy access to many of the .ini parameters through a very nice user interface.
Dynamic Performance Tuner and Load Accelerator - a mod that adjust shadow distance depending on your frame rate and also integrates a load accelerator.
Buffout4 - a mod that fixes several CTDs and performance issues of the game engine.
RAW INPUT - a mod that removes mouse acceleration and gives a more precise control over the game.
Binaural 3D Surround Sound for Headphones - a mod that simulates 3D sound on stereo headphones by modifying the sound with filters and to simulate sound as coming from above or below.
Reverb and Ambiance Overhaul - another audio mod to enhance the sound and depending on where you are (inside, outside, a hall, a vault, etc.).

DEF_UI - a mod that gives one a much better inventory and item lists when accessing containers.
Bhaals Better Sorting - one of several sorting mods, where this one provides a somewhat rounded feature set including coloured icons for DEF_UI.
All-In-One Better Mod Descriptions - this mod replace the default descriptions of armor and weapon modifications and replaces them with a full description of all the parameters affected by a mod.
Full Dialogue Interface - a mod that replaces the dialogue choices with more helpful ones.
Coloured Satellite Map - a mod that replaces the green map on the Pip Boy with a full colour version of a top-down view of the world.
Zoom-out Extended for Satellite Map with Large Icons - an add on to the above mod that also adds coloured icons for all the locations.
Extreme Particles Overhaul - a mod that changes the default weapon effects with much more particles, better flames, better muzzle flashes, etc.
Improved Workshop Lights - a mod that gives more radius to all the lights in your settlements with a softer glow and all round more realism.
Water Enhancement Textures - a mod that improves the detail of water surfaces and looks more realistic.
Vivid Landscapes - same as above, but for more detailed terrain textures.

This just as what I have found to be somewhat "must have" mods for myself. These change nothing about the actual game play, but give all round a better experience, more quality of life and better performance.

Believe it or not my all time favorite mod is "Lowered Weapons". Once I used the mod I realized how great it was.

Oh i got tons almost 400+

my usually used / most faved mods:

utility wise (for other mods):

!!!!! unofficial fallout 4 patch !!!!!!
= first off the bat a must have mod. Fixes stuff in the base game.

-bodyslider + a body type usually CBBE fusion girl or TWB (true wastelander body) b/c a ♥♥♥♥ ton of outfit mods use them usually CBBE being the standard but fusion girl and TWB are slowly catching up). It does take a short while to learn if you wanna make your own mods or outfits but it's well worth it.
-F4SE (fallout 4 script extender) so that mods work a bit better. Some mods use it but tbh having it helps not crash as much (i'v tested it with and without and with had less crashes even without other mods)
-looks menu mod=organizes your character customization interface but also used for alot of other character creation mods. Helps keep all your hairstyles, colors, and other stuff organized and you don't get those b.s. 4 items a time lists on the bottom right corner of the screen.
-mod configuration menu to help keep track of mods. Used by some mods as a requirement.
-settlement menu to help with settlements and mods for them
-ACKWN some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥=basically a mod that helps with other mods like armor weapons and power armor especially.
-high heels mod=if you play a female (some like 1-2 male heel mods) it adds alot of new possiblities for outfits.
-ZaZ extended skeletons=makes your player character more better for some clothing or armor mods.
-legendary effects mod=adds legendary effects that are craftable at both the weapons and armor workbenches.

guns and armor:
-LAER=spawnable on enemies and it does extra damage on power armor and/or robots and synths making it more interesting
-service rifle=a decent assault rifle compared to the regular pipe looking assault rifles default in vanilla fallout 4.
-more ballistic waves mod=you can off the bat create your own ballistic weave and it sorta works for all armors and clothing even modded ones default.
-classic fallout 3 / NV combat armor for more immersion
-swords weapon pack adds a ♥♥♥♥ ton of swords from other franchises. Not lore friendly but fun to use.
-m60 mod=adds an m60 and a turret to the settlement turrets list.
-riot shotgun=adds the riot shotgun from 3/new vegas into 4.
-alien assault blaster mod=adds a rifle type alien blaster to the game.
-P-113 plasma mod=adds tons of plasma theme'd mods including a jetpack and the OG plasma caster from new vegas.
-unarmed weapons in power armor mod=allows you to equip and use unarmed weapons on power armor.
-chinese assault rifle mod adds the fallout 3 chinese assault rifle into 4
-chinese stealth suit=adds a chinese stealth suit into the game. Very modable
-courser x-92 power outfit=adds a customizeable institute styled suit.
-acid soaker rebalance=makes the nuka world acid soaker not complete ♥♥♥♥
-minigun damage inc mod and minigun attachment mod=inc. the base damage of miniguns and adds new attachments for them.
-10mm smg=adds a 10mm smg to 4.

Settlement mods:
-CWSS Redux=workable showers, sinks, toilets, and bathtubs w/ accessories for both small buffs and happiness in settlements.
-fountain of olympus or food generators mods=so your settlers won't be stuck tilling the fields like a bunch of serfs. It adds food to your workbench default and raises the settlement food production lvls
-homemaker mod=adds a ton of items like institute structures and buildings furniture etc. so you can build in your settlement. Very immersive
-Beach settlement items mod=self explanatory. Adds beach theme'd items which makes areas near the sea, far harbor, and island settlement / modded settlements more immersive
-sanctuary hot springs mod=adds a tiny area near sanctuary up north that you can basically start with a ton of scrap-able items and a home base
-diamond city expanded=makes diamond city feel larger but may cause some fps drops with other mods
-glowing sea expanded mod=adds tons of ♥♥♥♥ below on the bottom left area of the map. Recently i think they made a different one that moves stuff to the bottom swamp area but it's a bit unstable
-Gooder neighbor=i think its called that. Basically Goodneighbor expanded. Adds tons of ♥♥♥♥ around goodneighbor. Basically all these X expanded mods add more ♥♥♥♥ to make it feel fuller and not empty like someone just dumped a square box with some items or cut back b/c of less processing power of gaming consoles.
-nuka settlement mod=adds the ability to spawn settlers if you choose not to side with the raiders in nuka world
-no settlement attacks=there are several but basically theres one for no settlements get attacked. Preston doesn't give you settlement defense radiant quests, and others that limit the radiant quests preston gives you.
-solar panels mod=adds solar panel power generators. Really useful good power source AND THEYRE NOT LOUD LIKE GENERATORS.
-stackable concrete foundations=to make makeshift walls but theres a castle settlement items mod that does pre-made castle walls you can plop down too.
-unlimited settlement building limit=self explanatory. slashes the settlement build limit or at least increases it dramatically. Though it can cause fps and ping issues if you add too many items.
-shrines and gods mod=adds shrines that do stuff for the settlement but you can activate them for boosts as well.
-build your own pool mod=you can make your own pools or just add water sources and visual effect water falls and water splashes to your settlements or randomly around the commonwealth.

stability and optimization mods:
-boston city fps fix=helps raise fps inside the boston city which happens alot even with better rigs b/c of the graphics card

-load accelerator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!=self explanatory. Makes your game load times less. Many people use it and i suggest it too especially if you have what was it Radon or Nvida graphics cards (forgot which is which)

-optimized vanilla textures=inc. fps a bit
-god ray fix=fixes god rays that cause crashes alot
-insignificant object remover=increases fps and less crashes by removing stuff that you won't really notice otherwise like undersea plants and debris
-tree remover=helps reduce trees alot inc. fps.
-clean water mod=cleans the waters making them clear and easier to see
-fog remover=removes indoor fog inc. fps inside settlements.

music/radio mods:
-old world blues mod that adds songs and story teller npc to the game (he's a famous fallout youtuber in shoudy cast podcast)
-OWB2 (old world blues 2)=works upon the 1st mentioned above. It's like 2 gigs worth though but has tons of ♥♥♥♥.
-kmart radio=adds kmart music. Immersive in areas like department stores or buildings
-electro swing mod=adds a ton of electro swing music in the form of a radio
-forgot the name but theres a radio mod that allows you to add your own songs into your own radio. Shows you how too but i had to remove it because the songs i picked kept messing it up.

other:
-DLC items in the commonwealth=adds weapons and ammo to spawn in the commonwealth. Adds to vendors too
-nuka cola flavors (i think) mod=a mod that adds nuka cola variants from nuka world like nuka victory or nuka orange to spawn in the commonwealth

-4 seasons mod=switches the terrain alot to look like summer/winter/fall/spring and some areas between fall/winter and winter/spring defrosting. Highly recommend it changes your fallout landscape dramatically more than most other texture mods

-party hat mod that adds party hats to the game b/c why not
-craftable nuka sodas mod=adds new recipes to craft your own nuka colas and the variants found in nuka world like nuka orange and nuka wild.
-the lost vault mod=adds a dungeon like mega vault into 4 for you to explore. Mostly repetative but fun none-the-less
-atlas submit mod=adds an enclave side quest that unlocks a player base in the glowing sea.

-militarized minutemen and we are the minutemen=combined both b/c they're separate but i always use them together. Makes the minutemen not ...well the P word or wimps. They can even spawn in power armor at higher lvls
-minutemen caches=adds caches you can open for joining the minutemen

-M's abominations mod=adds tons of new enemies to the game. Some fit others don't. It's really just a fun mod that makes the game harder especially in the dlcs. They can also drop hard to get or find items
-extended power lines mod=makes the reach for power pylons larger meaning you don't have to place one every 6 feet or 2 meters for your foreigners out there
-jetpack mod=self explanatory. Adds a craftable jetpack that allows you to fly a bit like the power armor jetpack accessories/mods but for your character
-castle redux=fixes the castle walls. That or craftable castle walls so it doesn't look like someone already attacked it
-clear glass mod=adds glass to the concrete building parts. Glass walls and ceilings.
-enemy spawn fix=makes it so that enemies all spawn outside the settlement bounds so they don't spawn inside

-some quest mods=forget their names but theres the one where Danse or you can takeover the BoS elder position (removed from the game but someone added it back sorta) or join the railroad. There's also the latest nexus mod railroad / institute alliance quest mod that changes ♥♥♥♥ around.

-hairstyle and haircolor mods=forgot the names but it's the most subbed mod(s) for their categories and they add like 150+ hairstyles and hair colors to the character creation list.
-man's best friend mod=allows you to have dogmeat + one other companion with you
-unlimited companions mod=the same as the top but with all companions and not just dogmeat.
-lost eyes mod=adds a ton of eye selections for the eyes in character creation / customization menu
-fireflies mod=adds fireflies visual effect to the game.
-institute centaurs mod=adds centaurs into the enemy list near super mutant locations

and lastly my most recommended very ultra important if you only get one mod get this one mod:
-touhou fumo mod=very essential and very important mod.

I think i went a bit overboard. But trust me with even 50% of these your game will feel like a 100% completely different game.

There are also other outfit, settlement, presets, customization, guns, armor, etc. mods out there but i feel these are a must any playthrough.

If I had to pick a handful of the most consequential quality of play mods that don't change gameplay but make life much easier....

FallUI. Simply *the best* interface overhaul. Don't even bother playing FO4 without it. Used in conjunction with an item sorter mod & icon package (like DEF_UI), you'll never go back to vanilla.

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/48758

While you're at it, FallUI Workbench & FallUI Map.

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/49300
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/49920

And Loot Detector... I use it to highlight those pesky unlooted corpses (though it can be configured to do much more than that, but I just need those sometimes difficult to find corpses to stand out).

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/4380

Finally, Shaikujin's Better warning for settlements being attacked. No more missed settlement attack notifications.

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/4106

I use many other mods, but those are the mods I couldn't live without.

As with all mods, make sure you check for and properly install any prerequsites.

And use a Mod Manager. I use Nexus Mod Manager Community Edition. Makes installing most mods a one click process.

https://github.com/Nexus-Mods/Nexus-Mod-Manager/releases

**VERY IMPORTANT**

Make a safety save prior to installing any mods. Try to decide if you're going to keep a mod quickly before you make any additional saves. If you don't know, savegames in FO4 have dependencies on what mods you install. You can break your game if you remove certain mods after playing with them for awhile... especially any large, game changing mods like sim settlements, for example. But even smaller mods that add scripts can really mess up your game if removed (though there is a way to fix that). Just be aware and realize that removal of some mods may cause you to have to revert back to a savegame prior to installing the mod if you remove it.

None,

I played more than 600 hours without any an had no notable issues with game. Unofficial patch changed nothing in my experience (issues i had prevailed with this one as well). Now I play with couple of mods and spending dozens time with troubleshoot and crashes (in aprticular Sim settlement 2.. but I like it too much to give up:p

Anyway I would evade mods for first gameplay, install just unofficial patch if you think you have to.

i think he implied he has played the game before and is wanting to try out mods

vanilla is nice but after 2 playthroughs you need mods or the game becomes insufferably repetative and bland/boring.

F4SE and Durable Vertibirds is a must. F4SE is obvious and Durable Vertibirds makes it so the military vehicle which is heavily armed not be destroyed by a raider with a pipe pistol.

You nailed exactly. 😂. I have been through two, well now about two and a half play throughs. And I’m looking for something more.

And to everyone. I appreciate all the info. You have given me tons of stuff to try. Think I will start with the unofficial patch and FallUI for starters and see how it goes. Thanks all.

Might be just me, but I have issues with the F4SE launcher in Vortex. Noticed some of my mods never seemed to work, and it was because F4SE wasn't running. Quitting the game and running the launcher again fixes it. I think if I have Steam running before launching Vortex that takes care of it, but haven't tested enough to be sure.

Just fyi. And I'll give another plug to FO4 Seasons, really changes the look of the Commonwealth, which is nice after a couple play throughs. If you have other texture mods, make sure it loads last.

A
In this cse you amek look more for some content or overhaul. Unofficial patch dont make exactly new experience.

I currently play with Sim settlements 2 and We are the minutemen - both very good in their content. However in particular SS2 bring couple issues and crashes - however it is nice way how flash the game completely out.

I was personally attracted to Frost but afaik it is not completed and abandoned.

Not any is really "must have" though.

You need run it by special button at Dashboard and be sure the path in setting is correct.

Another thing Vortex install PluginPreloader (if it is needed) wrong - you need to move files from Data to root folder manually (and adjust the Load Method in xml too)

Vivid Fallout All-in-one 4k for nice graphics
Unofficial patch for bugfixes
Load Accelerator to speed up area transitions
VATS Freeze Fix to stop the game from locking up in survival mode
Better Mod Descriptions to fix the vague weapon/armor mod descriptions
Langkard Mar 31, 2021 @ 2:36am
I prefer to stay minimalist with just a few quality of life mods:

Unofficial FO4 Patch
Quieter Settlements (lower the sound of turrets)
Screen Flicker Killer (gets rid of that annoying screen flicker on Pip Boy and computer terminals)
Lowered Weapons
Better Junk Fences (enhances the snap-to locations, so can add platforms for turrets and also makes the fences fit together better)
SKK Scrapper (Enables scrapping personal inventory junk or junk in a nearby owned workshop into the base components. Saves having to remove items and drop them then scrap them. Keeps the workshop inventory nice and clean. Also has toggles to enable/disable scrapping glass bottles used for water in survival mode, etc. and prevent scrapping junk needed for quests like the military grade circuit board.) NOTE: a newer version has a sort of universal workshop storage, but I don't use it since it makes getting Local Leader for settlement caravans pointless.

That's pretty much it.

Edit: Forgot one- Easy Lockpicking (also has Easy Hacking included). After many play throughs, the minigames of hacking and lockpicking get old. You still need to get the perks to advance what you can pick, but if you have the skill you don't have to mess with the minigame for that level lock or terminal.
