Btw.: Did you give your companion enough ammo for that weapon? If it's an ammo-type which they normally don't use, then they need the ammo from you and when they've used all their ammo, you've to re-supply them with that ammo every once in a while~~
No doubt, that game sucks~~
I guess, the only ones who might be 100% happy with that combat mechanics are those who're playing as lone wanderers (without companion).
it would of been cool if you could give them combat tactics. for instance prefer cover and find it if you are not in cover and shoot weapon no matter what and distancing.
Lone Wanderer is best without heavy companion modding IMO.
why not installing a mod, which let's you win, when you say "hi"?
You get +100 extra weight to carry with Lone Wanderer and if you get the third rank of Strong Back which allows you to use AP to move, shouldn't be a problem.
Also remember you can carry unlimited amount of weight and still use Vertibirds. Plus Lone Wanderer max rank grants you 25% more damage and 30% damage resistance. Too good not to use. Even on Survival.
The good reason to use companions is because one enjoys them and their comments and of course, some have great affinity perks.
Also, early in the game, some companions are just more powerful than the SS is. Notably Cogsworth. They can help a lot in staying alive. Esp. in Survival and Very Hard.
Pack Attack Companion Edition is a relatively new mod specifically to overhaul the AI of companions (and Pack Attack NPC Edition does it for enemies) that I find work fairly well. Better Companions is a great mod that lets you set which weapons companions use at close, medium, and far distance; it also lets you toggle on infinite ammo and things like that. Although Better Companions also buffs them and their perks, so not necessarily everyone's cup of tea.
Then there's automatron; lets you mod Codsworth or Curie to be whatever you want, and alot tougher. Only give them laser guns and they won't get into melee if they can avoid it.
Or just Dogmeat. At least you KNOW what he will do, no wondering if he will use his gun or not.
