So, sneaked near the companion and told them to "follow me" - they instantly start to engage the enemy. Told them to go to some place further away - they keep engaging the enemy.
*sigh*
Companion AI in Fallout 4 is the worst.
you might go look at the description for her and see if she sounds good to you.
she is not editable with console comands likr the others, and yet she has a terminal that you build in your setlement that allows changes to her tactics in combat and how she behaves in stealth mode.
her name is heather and is not always chattering in your ear, but occasionally has something interesting to say.
here is a link and you can read about her there.
i rcomend her.

Curie is worthless at sneaking though, unlike all other companions, she has no sneak perk (Most companions have at least 2, Deacon and Dogmeat 4)
That covers sneak.
Unfortunately, there's no ability to set their tether range so they keep more distance without manually issuing orders.
however if you have mods which change companions' appearances, they will not be compatible with each other. this can be fixed using FO4Edit, by dragging the "Doesn't affect stealth meter" flag to the appearance mod.
