Best way to maximize FPS?
Playing on ultra 1920x1080 with a GTX 1060 6gb. Game runs at a smooth 60 fps normally, but when I get into dense city areas it fluctuates between 30-60. Anyone have an idea of a few settings that may be causing this dip?

Bro you dont want more than 60 cuz then game starts to be buggy.
For fps boost in City i strongly recommend FPS dynamic shadows

Op, you're going to get some frame rate drops in Downtown Boston and usually around the Corvega plant. That's pretty much normal. Especially when you're running the game on Ultra settings.

What will help some is to go to the game's Options menu, then Advanced and lower Shadow Distance to medium and turn off Godrays.

If you installed a mod called "scrap everything", it adds to the huge fps drop of south boston, which can sometimes make it totaly unbearable ... I do disable it once i'm done with it ("x ...

scrap everything (and almost any scrap mod) is HORRIBLE for game stability. even having it enabled yet not scrapping anything will cause problems. ive used them for over a year and even though i love the freedom of removal...i finally stopped using them and viola....a much more stable game.

The underlying technology of F4 can't handle the vast amount of draw calls produced. The way around it is to reduce the amount and brute force. Lower shadow distance and god rays. Use the mod that lowers shadow distance according to fps.
F4 should have been the poster child for DX12

The game can dip for everyone regardless of specs, the game engine is pretty much stretched to its limit with fallout 4. No doubt they will "upgrade" it again for the next eldar scrolls game, and "upgrade" it again for Fallout 5.

Hear alot about this subject.
But have never heard from those who bring it up,
Just how many draw calls per second DX11 can handle or what this game actually produces?

Not that I dont disagree that DX 12 or even Vulkan would be a huge step in the right direction.
But I really just dont see this game pushing the limit of what DX 11 can itself handle..
Reason I say that is, I have no frame rate drops anywhere in FO4 constant 60fps at all max.

Out of curiosity I parted with the cash for 3DMark even though I'm not a fan of it in the least.
Benchmark program that still to this day, cant push my system to its limits, naa not a fan..

But here is my api overhead results per second.
Single threaded DX 11 - 2,495,586
Multi-threaded DX 11 - 4,660,540
Vulkan - 22,777,737
DX 12 - 42,926,697

yeah BTW I am aware the max draw calls per second is the point fps drops to 30,
and that result is averaged.
FO4 is multi-threaded so using the multi-threaded results.

Now do the math,
multi-threaded at 60fps = just over 77,675 draw calls per frame.
Yet at 30fps = 155,351 draw calls per frame...

Good theory and all, but the numbers really just dont add up.
Havent time atm, but I'll lock the api test to 60fps later & see what those numbers have to say..

so there are a couple tweaks you can do with shadows in the .ini files for Fallout 4 that drastically increase FPS without much if any at all visual loss, you can also install Hein84 or Hien87 can't remember his name's,Texture mods which increase performance and look better, they are part of the "Vivid"Fallout collection,it works well with Vivid Weathers

Put shadow distance to medium, that is usually the biggest fps eater.

There is also a mod called: Boston fps fix.
It is on Nexusmods. The goal of the mod is to reduce the amount of draw calls in the worst performing city areas by regenerating the precomb / visibility data.

You cant play with 60 fps in boston, get used to it, because the engine is archaic.

I recommend this mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/26286

No idea why this mod isn't more popular, I experienced a massive fps boost in city areas (GTX 1060 OC 6GB).
