way I finished that mission - build beds - walked off worked on another quest - came back thanks for the beds (already built the water / food / defenses) all got triggered to complete status over the course of a hour play time
Not for completion of the quest, but if I remember correctly an uncovered bed does not improve happiness like a covered one. But it doesn't have to be enclosed by walls but it needs a roof over it.
What do you mean by "heights?" My experimentation found that a sleeping bag on the floor of a pre-fab unit with a floor and ceiling but no walls provides the same happiness as a proper bed with legs.
