Which Gaming Laptop?
Hi

I currently have a moderate gaming PC ,which I mainly play Fallout 4 on, but would like the idea of a gaming laptop now to also play this game.

My budget at a stretech is £800 and I have found the below models on ebuyer.com. I know that in general more momey better spec but I have looked at this a lot over the last weeks and some of the specs seem to be less for the money e.g. a GDDR3 2GB GPU is more than a GGDR3 4GB GPU and there seems to be very little in the other specs e.g. CPU disk space and drives.

So here is the budget end model , I get the impression from reviews that the case build quality is no brilliant though :

Then there is this model :

and finally the one I think looks good on paper but models above this one seem to have less decent specs so it makes me unsure why this is priced at 799 :

if your intentions is to game then DO NOT USE A LAPTOP.
laptops will always be inferior to tabletops in all ways but portability.
its easier to maintain, you get more performance per £, it is less prone to thermal damages due to bad air circulation and usually has far more storage space then a laptop.
ergo its cheaper in the long run to have a tabletop then a laptop since they last longer and are easier to upgrade which will for a cheap sum improve and extend lifespan even further.

dont know much about intel laptops but as a guidline for you. my girlfriend bought a msi gx70 laptop for £850 and can play fallout 4 on medium settings at 1080 at about 20-60 fps. it has an amd a10 5750m processor and amd 8970m 2gb graphics.

i am thinking that unless you can find a trusted source and buy second hand you might struggle to find a new laptop to run a stable fallout for that money.

I understand your comments here Tyrant and I appreciate your reply, however as mentioned I do have a gaming PC but in addition to that I would still like to buy a laptop even if it is at the budget end of the range as long as it can play Fallout 4 and hopefully some other titles too.

Thanks for your reply here, I do know that the budget model can play this game as I asked one of the owners for their imput and they were playing it on ultra all of the way though.

Still I would like the idea of if I do buy a laptop, it could still handle other titles sometime into the future. Hence my thought on the £800 model but I was unsure of why this was priced as such with that spec when other models above it seem to have less for the money.

Thanks

What's the exchange rate of the GBP since Brexit? There are some gaming laptops at around $1200 USD that feature I7 6700HQ (Or whatever the mobile variant is) and GTX1060M GPUs which should run Fallout 4 quite well.

As a few have already said, if you intend to game, a Laptop is a bad value-for-performance proposition, but if you absolutely must have a laptop, within your budget... Check amazon for stuff like Asus's ROG branded laptops.

Laptops are life savers for those who dont sit at home all their life. I reccomend a ASUSg751 or the new g752. Currently have a G751 with the 970m and runs fallout 4 just fine.

I have an intel i5-6200U 2.3 GHz, 16GB DDR4, NVidia GTX 960M 2GB. Was 750€ a few months back.
It runs F4 at moderate settings between 40-50fps at 1080p even with graphics intensive mods. I could probably be at high settings but I prioritze those extra fps over some texture in the background being a tiny bit more detailed.

Right, it's morally superior to be disconnected from Reality at Starbucks as opposed to your own home.

I've never had time to game on any business trip I made. Then again, my business trips involve 7 days in a decompression chamber with 5 other guys talking about how not to die tomorrow. lol.

Really ? Passive agressive much lol

Anyhow............. OP, if you can wait newer cards come out at xmas which means sales on current models. If you can wait a month and 1/2 your budget might buy you more then than it can now : )

I have a desktop AND i dont sit at home my whole life lol

Just go for this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-Leopard-1087UK-15-6-Inch-Notebook/dp/B01GS0IOLC/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1478177121&sr=1-2&th=1

The i7-6700 will be good for gaming as more games are seeing performance boosts from Hyperthreading and the GTX 960M should be enough for fallout 4. If you download mods such as the Vivid Fallout texture mods then that'll free up Vram memory and keep your fps higher. Just disable god rays, AA and other taxing graphical features and you should be all set. Just keep in mind that no matter what laptop you end up getting the battery life will only last a couple of hours however i believe you can buy external power sources (Direct batteries and Rechargers) which would set you back more money but will increase your play time.

Also keep in mind laptops get hot, maybe include a cooling tray/stand into your budget : )

Just sit it on a dinner tray that you can buy for like £5

Hi All

Thanks for all of these replies , so from them I see no one has said much about the laptops listed, does this mean either they are no good or just that no one has had any experience with them ? I know I am limiting my options here but I would like to choose from one of these.

I presume MSI and Asus are good makes of gaming laptops no? Also I will not be hamming this machine that much e.g. two days a week at most.

Thanks here for your suggestion but this to me looks a lower spec that the MSI I have memnioned is is not for the same price ?

Thanks

you can get a gaming laptop, but it is going to cost more money than a tabletop. As a treat to myself for finishing 19 years of child support, i bought myself a gaming laptop. If i were to get a tabletop version, it would never get used. I play games either on my couch, or on the floor infront of my tv.
