Off-topic, the mention of showers reminded me of a roguelike game called Cataclysm, where one of the starting choices was to be someone who was in the shower when the zombie apocalypse happened, and you start out dressed in a towel, with hardly any equipment.
That could be it. "Special" outfits the player wears will sometimes not re-wear when you're done with a shower. In example, The Silver shroud costume before it becomes a non-quest item. You might be onto something.
