It's actually fairly easy to miss, if you don't hear the explosion/sonic boom, or see it shoot over head...
It creates a crash site, where by you can then find a blood trail from a surviving alien carrying the Alien Blaster, a unique energy weapon...
The first time it happened to me was when I stood at the top of the screen in Starlight. I almost jumped from my stool in RL and down from the screen in game. Codsworth commented about it immediately.
You can miss it pretty easy if you're in combat or something.
If you go to the crash site (look to the south of Oberland Station), you can track an alien inside a cave nearby. He's always been hostile to me but drops a cool weapon when he dies.
No real story as such, just the crash itself and a unique encounter and item...
A bit of useful - not much - loot can be picked up and it respawns.
Are you sure? I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of clicking on the ham radio in the cave? As I certainly didn't follow the radio signal - I was attracted by the flaming wreckage at night...
iirc all fallout titles have at least one UFO event.
