Clean Install
Does anyone know how to get a really good, clean install of FO4 ?
I have un-installed and re-installed through Steam and my game continues to be messed up. It gets worse everytime I re-install. I tried to purchase a CD of the game files and got a link to Steam instead.
When un-installing, I delete the FO4 folders in the three locations I know of. I re-install the game, go through the DLC cleaning, etc. When I play the game, it continues to be messed up, and often it is in worse shape than before I un-installed. Can anyone give me some help on how to get a really clean install, or perhaps where I can get a CD of the game files ?

what do you mean its "messed up"

Delete \Steam\SteamApps\Common\Fallout 4
Delete the INI files in Documents\My Games\Fallout4

Then click Steam|Library|Games|Fallout 4| Properties | Local Files | Verify local game cache

This should get you a vanilla install of the game. Run it so it detects your hardware and creates the ini files before attempting to mod the game.

Edit: Your saves should be in Documents\My Games\Fallout4\Saves so don't delete them if you want to keep your saves.

Turn off steam cloud sync first

It will resync old files that can cause problems

What problems?

I always turn off all running programs possible so the game gets the most power possible.

I have the CD and it does not contain all the game files. Even with the CD, most of the installation is does over the Internet through Steam.

The problems right now start after rescuing Preston and gang from Concord. After returning to Sanctuary, you talk to preston, he starts to talk, then stops for a few minutes, then he starts up again just at a different point. You do not get the Tenpines Bluff job but instead he goes into his speal about you taking over the Minute Men. When done talking to him, check the Workshops in the Pipboy and it shows that Tenpines Bluff and Green Top Nursery are both in your workshop list, but you have never been to either of them. Sanctuary is not shown in the workshop list.
If you dismiss Dogmeat, the game says he is going to Red Rocket and he does. It does not give you a choice. If you dismiss Piper, the game says she is going to Red Rocket but she goes to Public Occurrences. Again, you do not get a choice.
These are the current game breaking problems I am having. I have not played the game very far because it just does not feel right. But it seems like the game gets worse every time I re-install it.
I have used FO4edit to clean the only DLC (Wasteland Workshop) that I use. Then I used LOOT to check my mods. It did move a couple of them around, which I accepted. But I did not find any major problems with any of my mods and did not report any of them as "dirty".
So, all I can figure is that Steam copies my game files when I un-install, then just reloads the same messed up files when I re-install, and the corruption just continues to get worse.

Also: I do not subscribe to Steam Cloud, nor to any other Cloud. I do not trust the internet so completely that I would store ANYTHING in a cloud !

yeah for a start dont even touch fo4edit. since you modified the files when they get uninstalled its possible the modified files don't get uninstalled. find the fallout 4 folder and nuke it completly

Thank you for the info. Your method has been the only one I have found which actually resets the game files. There is still a problem with Preston's talk stalling (he starts saying something - usually related to a new quest - and just stops, when he starts again it's at the end of the dialogue - "I'll mark it on your map") but the overall results are back to actually doing the quests in order. The pipboy listings of the workshops is actually linked to those which I have opened.
Thanks again for your help. I had just about given up all hope.

also press the window key + r, then type "appdata". Go into local file & delete the Fallout4 folder in there as well. Took me forever to find that one. Good luck & happy gaming :)

I've run into that issue as well, I think it's actually an issue with how the game is rendering not with the game itself. I am assuming you're using an Nvidia GPU, just because that's what I experienced it with. try opening the Nvidia control panel and find the setting for limiting pre-rendered frames to 1. once I set that, the audio issues, as well as an issue where the movement speed in the game was insanely fast, also corrected.

You're both aware this thread is over 5 years old, yes?

No DLC's, add-ons or Mod's.

I'm glad that someone found this discussion and necroed it. My game is exactly as the OP wrote about his game. I've often wondered if there were hidden files messing up my game that I missed when deleting and reloading, and I've reloaded this game too many times. My very first play though, I had to delete and reload 5 time in a row to get it to be halfway playable. Now I have this as a guide.

Thank you :)
