Weird Save Game Bug
Going to try to keep this brief. So, recently when I got back into Fallout 4, I noticed that whenever I save my game (overwrite, because I try to keep my saves to 1-2 saves per character), then fast travel, my newer save which should have overwritten the older save is instead a separate save. In other words, the game acts as if made a separate save. This would be fine if I wanted 50 billion save games, but I'm getting tired of constantly deleting unwanted older saves.
Any ideas for fixing this, or what might be causing it?

Just go into your save file folder and delete what ever bothers you.or move it into another folder:

Documents\My Games\Fallout4\Saves

The game will however not save a new character over an older, different character as far as I know.

I don't think you understand the problem. I'm playing the same character, but for some reason when I overwrite the save files, it treats it as if I'm doing the opposite- making separate save files.

It seems to be doing this whenever I save, then load into another cell (going through doors, fast traveling, etc.)

Any way to fix this? I hate having to constantly delete saves. I shouldn't have to when all I am doing is overwriting the same save, it shouldn't be making "backups".

If you're talking about how it autosaves, it should cycle through about three of them, continually replacing the oldest autosave as it makes a newer one. Although it lists them with your other saves, it's able to identify them as separate to the ones you've made yourself (so it doesn't replace your manual savegames).

They aren't autosaves. It's taking the actual saves I am overwriting, and making them separate saves. It does this when I save and then hit a loading screen, such as going through a door or fast traveling.

I am a pick about saves too and noticed that I have a surprising string of saves when I stopped playing today. I wondered if it might have to do with me modding my character or changing his appearance? I've only started one game.

One thing to note, it autosaves whenever you pick a Perk in your Pipboy as soon as you exit. This isn't toggleable in the Settings menu. It also does not overwrite them so you may end up with a large string of saves depending on how many levels you have gained since the last time you clear them out.

Second thing. I've noticed that whenever I look at my list of saves, it frequently doubles up the names of my 2nd to last save with the last save. So it may say Commonwealth for both of them, even if one was saved at the Railroad HQ. This doesn't happen with Quick/Exit saves though. You may be mistaking this for a 2nd save. They are different though. If you mouse over it for a second or two, it will change to its real name. Scrolling down with the arrow keys though, it will not change to its actual name. This might be mod related, or just a quirk with how my rig runs Fallout, but it's not a big issue to me.

In regards to the first thing, I have checked that. I am fully aware of the autosaves. I have all other autosaves toggled off, so the only autosaves I get are the ones from choosing perks and exiting the pipboy. I have taken this into account, and it isn't my issue, for my issue happens a whole lot more frequently.

In regards to the second idea, I have not heard of that, but it doesn't seem to quite match up with the issue I am encountering. The issue I am encountering is basically this scenario:

I save in Diamond City. I explore for a while. I save in the Commonwealth. At this time, my only save is in "Commonwealth", as it has overwritten Diamond City <as intended>. I then choose to fast travel to Sanctuary/enter a building/anything with a loading screen. I check my save files, and it shows that I have a save for "Commonwealth" and one for "Diamond City". The Diamond City save was the first save in this scenario, which WAS overwritten but, for whatever reason, is now a separate save.
It's also important to note that it doesn't do this consistently.
Furthermore, I'd like to note that I've been getting crashes to desktop upon saving at random. Not every single time I save, not even most times, but once every dozen times or so.

I'm thinking both issues might be mod related, maybe? I did have some new mods installed when I started noticing the issues. I can list some of the newer mods, and if any of them are known to have any of the above issues, perhaps someone can say so.

Newer Mods:
The Danse Dilemma
Spring Cleaning
Place Everywhere
Live Dismemberment
More Uniques
9x 39 Project

Do you have cloud saves enabled? Could they be showing up in your list? I know I disabled all mine, but this might be something to check out.

Most likely it is a mod issue though I've never seen, or heard of it. Damn near everything is a mod issue. Heh. If you find out what causes it, make sure you post it. This one has me interested.

I do have steam cloud sync enabled, though I've always had it and this hasn't always been an issue.

I have tested each of the new mods to the best of my ability. Even with all of them disabled, however, I still get the same save game issue.
I tried disabling steam cloud sync, but for whatever reason, that made my game's loading screens incredibly slow, to the point the game was unplayable. I'm talking 5-10 minute loading screens versus the high speed loading screens I normally get.

I would like to note that the general bug I am experiencing isn't occurring as often as it was previously, nor in the same pattern. Before, it was with every loading screen after a save/death. Now, it's just occurring at random, less often, but without the restriction of a loading screen. I've paused the game during dialogue and noticed a "ghost" save file, when moments prior there was none.

If anyone has any other ideas, please do tell. This isn't a game breaking bug, but it is rather annoying to be deleting "ghost saves" that were overwritten but choose to pop up in the future as separate saves.
