Preston Garvey's "Endless" Missions
Does Preston Garvey keep giving missions until a certain point in the storyline is passed, or are his "Help this settlement" missions finite, limited in number?

This "oh, one more thing" business is starting to become tedious. It makes me feel like a waiter again where this idiot four-top askes for more pepper sauce, and then when I start to leave the table after delivering it, "Could we have another breadbasket?" and then when I try to leave after that, it's some other ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing.

I wanna say, "Look, I'll be right back with a pad and pencil so you can make a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ LIST!"

Unlimited. Infinite. Never-ending. Forever.
Just never turn in the latest quest, or run like hell after turning in the quest. Then never go near him again. Only solutions. I leave him at the Castle and never listen to the radio and never go back to the castle.
When I am 'done' with the Minutemen, I give him the generals uniform, assign him to the generals bed at the castle and pretend I resigned and promoted him to general. Then, like I said above, never go to the castle and never listen to the radio.

They actually do end, eventually, believe it or not. On my Minutemen General character it seems as though I've completely exhausted his missions, though the radio still gives them to me from time to time.

Edit: I'll add that A: It may be a bug, but it also may not. I'm not sure.
B: It requires you complete a LOT of missions. Could take several days of questing.

I use the mod One Minutemen Radiant Quest At A Time[www.nexusmods.com]

mod authors description

This mod stops the radiant quest spam which Preston and Radio Freedom love giving so much, by changing the maximum amount of recruitment quests from 3 to 1. Meaning when you hand in a quest to Preston now, he will not immediately give you another. He will acknowledge the completion of a quest and the dialogue will end. If you wish to receive another quest, start a conversation with him again or listen to Radio Freedom. You will never have more than 1 radiant quest at a time.

If you don't wish to have a radiant quest at all, then once you hand in the quest to Preston, never talk to him again and never listen to Radio Freedom.

Thanks, guys. I began to have a sneaking suspicion after completing the tenth one. I'll just stop turning them in to him and uncheck the last one. There's one thing these missions are good for: Allowing low-level players to rank up, and gain more junk and bottlecaps.

You know, when I see a Budweiser bottlecap on the sidewalk IRL, I think, What? Only one?

If I may comment and add to that - yes, it is good for new Characters, to build up Gear/Caps/etc (upgrading Weapons/Armor, Selling what isn't used). I get why they put it in there anyway...

Your approach is what most people do (since it isn't supposed to end, they continually radiate out from the quest giver, to give more End/Post-Game material).

If I may add, once you do the Automatron DLC (if you have that), the repeatable ("Radiant") quests there not only give materials/gear/Caps/etc, they also have a chance to save some Settlers - who will ask to join you - which you can then Send to any Settlement you want some population help with.... I think that's a fantastic addition to the game (and think perhaps it was meant to be included in the game, but wasn't finished in time).

Lastly, the Radiant Quests also help with Affinity gain (Companions), if you take them with you (the ones that like helping others and you want to 'max out').

This is normal. Once you get radio freedom up and running it takes over from Preston. (I am pretty sure of this. Preston will stop giving quests once the radio is up.) You still get endless Minuremen quests. But now they come from the radio.

That's mercifull. I leave him at hangman's alley without water, food or bed. Occasionaly, when I'm close I let whatever companion I have powerfist him. I watch from a safe distance.

I never understood the Preston meme. It was funny sure, but a quest basically means loot, money, and XP. So many people rightfully complain about games suffering from having nothing to do after the main quests are done, and yet people didn't like this, simply because of the frequency you get them. If you want to stop, just don't approach him again when the last one is turned in. (Once the radio thing is unlocked.) Even if you do...so what if you have a left over quest sitting there? Yet, no one complained about the endless bounty quests you could get from inns in Skyrim, which were essentially the same thing. This game just cuts the chase and gives them to you ahead of time.

However,....if these missions actually paid worth a damn, I think people would actually find them less annoying. (Once the missions stop being about saving anyone or unlocking a settlement and are there just to give you something to do.) Especially for people like me who often don't use fast travel because that means more encounters = more loot.

But just like Skyrim, they follow the Bethesda logic of having everything pay 100 gold or caps, (or this strange FO4 trend of 97-99 just to insult you) regardless of difficulty or your level, yet anything worthwhile in stores costs amongst the thousands. I know you can sell loot, and loot itself can be used to barter without the trasnaction of caps, but you don't need a mission to obtain loot. It still doesn't prevent the mission itself feeling worthless due to the reward being so trivial.

There's a mod that addresses this issue called "The Notice Board" for Skyrim, which is quite popular. Why no one has done this for Fallout 4 is beyond me. I've had to cheese it and create my own set of rules and do a little math everytime I get paid, using the console.

People misunderstand Preston.

1. Preston has you help people in trouble and you are simply not allowed to say no. In a roel playign sort of way it makes sense, however for a game mechanic it sucks.

2. Preston is meant as a go between for all your settlements. This is to prevent you from having to run around to each settlement on your own to find out if they need help. If no mission is needed for your settlements then there is one generated randomly just like the other mission NPCs.

3. Just have to break the cycle of unable to say no. Complete Preston's mission he gave you then simply do NOT go turn it in to him. When the timer on the mission runs out you will get the reward for completion.

4. You can leave him in the museum. Almost every game I play I leave the group in the museum. It will not block any quests form you except Minutemen quests. I presonally wait until i raise perception to 10, grab Dogmeat then go into the museum and grba the perception bobblehead and Dogmeat's name.

May I ask what you mean by "dogmeat's name"?

Unless you go into the museum then Dogmeat's name simply shows aa "Dog." It is not until the conversation with Mama Murhpy that she tells you his name and the name is changed.
