Getting a settlement to 100% happiness (solved!)
Anyone have any advice on how to get Sanctuary (or any settlement) from 90% happiness to 100%? I feel like I've done all i could but nothing will get it closer to 100. I briefly had it at 92 but then it dipped back down to 90.

I'm not as efficient as some people who are more patient with building and micro-management but I crafted a ♥♥♥♥-load of beds, planted a ton of crops. got over 200 defense by just placing heavy laser turrets everywhere, and installed a industrial water purifier in that river nearby, gave everyone decent armor and weapons, put up decorations in the houses, installed lights in the houses, crafted and powered up a jukebox outside the main house in Sanctuary, and few other things I can't be bothered to remember. It's so damn tedious and it's like it slows down a crawl once you get to 90% happiness.

Also is getting a settlement with just 3 people much easier to get 100% happiness? I hope that's the case because getting 20 settlers to occupy a settlement is annoying and then you have to give them each a job.

Easiest way, no cheats. Make a new settlement. Make it liveable for 1 person. Build a bar. Hire Sheffield from Diamond City to run your bar. !00% happiness in about 2 days.

Pretty sure that the various stores also raise the happiness of your settlement. Do you have a trader/weapons/armor/chems series of shops setup?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

I have people assigned as a trader, weapons merchant and armor merchant but not a chems merchant. Do you mean a doctor/medic? I have that a doctors station crafted and someone assigned to it.

What do you mean "Make a new settlement"? You mean go find a empty one, clear it of hostiles, and send just one settler and Sheffield over there? I could do that. I didn't know you could build a bar though. I already hired Sheffield so i guess i'll go ahead and try what you suggested. I just want the achievement. Otherwise I wouldn't be doing this.

Check those items in the build menu. You will see that weapons and armor traders dont bring happiness. All the others do. Also the juice bar and slot machine from Vault 88. The weight bench and balance bar.

Juice bar and slot machine? I haven't been to vault 88 yet. I also should have mentioned that I don't own any of the dlc's yet. I thought I read something the other day that had to do with one of the dlc's and settlements. Also I only did my first playthrough earlier this month. I'm still kind of new to Fallout 4.

I did it by accident the first time. I thought it would be funny to hire Sheffield and put him behind the bar in Sanctuary. Of which I had built it up to hold settlers but it was empty as I hadnt rescued Preston yet. Turned out it was already known to work.

I'm replying to this again because I just noticed your edit. I have dogmeat at Oberland Station (with Piper and the two settlers who are there by default) so I can send him over to whatever place I try and setup with Sheffield.

Dogmeat doesnt count. He is a companion. There is a wandering guy that sells dogs and also (dlc) you can capture them in cages.

Okay, cool. So yeah I guess I'll just try and setup one follower and Sheffield at a settlement. Also does happiness increase while I sleep? Or do I literally just have to sit in the settlement and let time pass naturally? Because apparently settlement happiness increases more/faster if you're there.

I haven't found that guy who sells those dogs yet as he's a random encounter. I can't teleport him to me either because Bethesda thought it was a good ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to idea to make some npc's have no prid (their code thing) so you can't ever lock onto them with the console and teleport them to you (or vice versa). Also he's apparently NON-essential so he might have already died to some random enemy a long time ago.

Bethesda did this crap with the npc in Skyrim who is a fan of "The Gourmet", who you kill and impersonate during the Dark Brotherhood main quest. He's a unique random encounter but he's un-essential and has no prid so most people never meet the guy.

Things dont update in the settlement while you are there. I'm not sure if it runs the happiness script calculation at the same time but the script to determine an attack or not is at about 6 am.

edit: no other people , just use Sheffield and put a bunch of food and water in the workshop
edit edit: oh, and I didnt mean you need a dog with Sheffield, poorly placed wording on my part.

Okay so literally just Sheffield alone in a settlement...assigned to a bar, is that right?

Yup. Worked for me. Make sure you put some food and water in the work bench for him, to make up for no farmers.
edit: and I dressed him in a Tux just for giggles ( probably doesnt make a difference tho )

Jamaica Plain is easy to get 90% of happiness with 2 settlers. To reach 100% just 1-2 more and use your imagination.

So putting food (and by food I mean normal food like corn, tato, etc, not stuff like fancy lad snack cakes) in the work bench will substitute having farmers tending to crops? I might just start a new game, give myself whatever crafting materials I need through console, and then go immediately to diamond city to hire sheffield (starting out with 10 charisma of course).
