Mothman
So we're getting a bunch of folklore creatures in 76, and it seems our lil' friend here in the trailer with the yellow bright eyes will be stalking us. What other type of folklore did West Virgina have? We gonna get the Grinning Man as well in the future?

Also, what is that one guy that's wearing a hood and standing in front of a mine entrance in the trailer? Molemen? What type of creature is this based off of? Tommyknockers?

Just looks to me like some kind of mutant in a mask. The Fallout world is full of those, and other weird looking mutants and crazies. They usually fall into a certain paramater though, but according to the Making of Fallout 76, this might be some unique mutated person/creature, somewhat like a ghoul. This takes place extremely early in the timeline and at that time the world was full of dark and awful things, very high radiation, and wild mutations that eventually died out by the time of Fallout 1. I think the inspiration is pulled by some of the insane mutants seen here in this early promotional art of FO1

Not every mutant is going to be based off some folklore. And in fact, I find that kinda weird. How the heck is Mothman even here? Is he some mutant? If so, did he just HAPPEN to mutate out of some creature to perfectly resemble the one from folklore? I find that hard to believe. He either had to be a pre-war experiment that was the source of the myth in the Fallout Universe or Bethesda is being goofy again, and it annoys me when they do that.
So a lot of the creatures in here we never seen before were an old mutation that became extinct?

Yep. Making of Fallout 76 Doc.

One dev specifically said, that the crazy monsters here are "Hyper mutations", that because they were so strange and not really viable as a species, they've all died off by Fallout 1. That's why we see stuff like Scorchbeasts, Wendigos, other crazy monsters in 76, because it's only 25 years after the war.

I find it a bit weird, and a little inconsistent. I personally thought that for a long time until the events of FO1 the wasteland was a quiet radiated hell and only after some time did living things struggle to come back to life, with a few rought mutations. Though Bethesda's Fallout is a great deal wackier.
So is a Scorchbeast a bat and was that the thing flying in the trailer inside the fog? Well if ya look at the location he's at, it's a bridge and one location on the map is called Mothman Bridge.

Yeah I'm pretty sure those are both the Scorchbeast, and yes it looks to me like it's part bat. I'm pretty sure it -- Breathes fire? It looks part Deathclaw so maybe it was a Pre-War experiment.
I like how mutated creatures go extinct because they can't survive in the climate or hunted to extinction, like IRL. So cool! :D

I wonder what would happen if a Deathclaw comes in contact with a Grafton. What would win? And I wonder if they'll add some of the beasts from Far Harbor in the future, like those Mantis Shrimps. Do ya think there'll be some special events in the game like Halloween or Christmas where they add new items and stuff only exclusive to that event?

I have a feeling some of the Folklore monsters, like the Mothman and Flatwoods creature are going to be more like Bosses/Super Bosses than standard enemies. We already know Mothman has combat stages.

I hope not. I have mixed feelings about Fallout 76. I actually somewhat hope it fails and we see none of this. I was hoping this game would've been the New Vegas 2 that would rock the community and hopefully shut up some of the curmudgeons, and it ended up being a huge, well, disappointingly NOT what I had hoped, thing. That means these 3 years since Fallout 4 have been wasted waiting on this, and it'll be a bunch more years until just the possibility of Fallout 5. Even then, if this is too successful they'll have less reason to work on that sooner because they'll have to push more resources to devving for 76.

Also Deathclaws are just simply the most deadly creatures in the Wasteland next to Tunnelers. I'm pretty sure Deathclaw always wins.

Oh yeah, it's a given. They said that in the doc. Mothman is a super creature who watches you and stalks you apparently. Well that's the plan anyways. I just wonder how the heck he exists here in the first place, and what's the explanation. Are they just going to have the folklore monster of every region appear as a mutant now in every Fallout?
I say let's call Fallout 76 an experiment, to see if Bethesda is capable of making a first person MMO with guns. I know Elder Scrolls Online did well, let's see if they're able to do things with 76. Just keep your expectations low and think of the lore of it. Unforunately, my hopes are up very high. Also, I heard two locations are based off of two haunted locations in West Virginia. (Yes, I believe in ghosts. Don't judge me). An abandoned haunted Amusment Park and an Insane Asylum. I bet if my friends and I set up shop there for a time being before moving out, I'm gonna see or hear weird things. Like the Winchester Mansion in Fallout 4. Which was actually based off of two stories. The Winchester Mansion, which Mrs. Winchester made for spirits with doors and hallways that go to nowhere because she thought she was responsible for the death of many due to the Winchester Rifle. And that lil' girl serial killer ghost is based off the Lizzie Borden murders.

I'll be the insane bastard and charge at Mothman with only my Vault Suit and punch it to death. I'm screwed if it can fly.

It sounds like Bethesda is opting for a lot more things server side, so I'm imagining things like Mothman and Flatwoods Creature are going to be like Timed Spawns, such as epic enemies from other MMOs, requiring Groups of high level players to beat. They'll effectively be gatekeepers to some high level content in that context too.

From what I've gathered, mothman is heavily inspired by the Songbird from Bioshock Infinite in terms of combat and overall feel. It stalks you, is ambivilent most of the time, until you do something that angers it.

So I can be anywhere in the world and I'll see these yellow eyes in the distance? What happens if I just take my gun and shoot it. Will that aggrovate it? :D
