Tradecraft Elevator won't open?

I decided to do the frontal assault, cause I ain't no ♥♥♥♥♥, but now that I'm in the basement the elevator refuses to work. I opened the bookcase, but no matter what I do it just says "the elevator is not working" or something to that effect. Am I missing something stupid obvious?

So after reading some forum threads about this- it's just bad level design. The "backway" is really just the exit and you can't actually go in through there... even thought it makes it seem as though you can. Smart.

Frontal assault is offered as an option, so the option should be valid.

However, since I always come to the drainpipe first, I take it. I've never done the frontal assault. Good thing, because I'd have been P.O'd to go through all that and then have to take the back door anyway.

It would be gg wp if the game actually let me choose the hard (and more rewarding) way.
