in my opinion it would be cheating to use the mod that allows achievements while using mods.
for me, achievements are the ONLY part of the game that is multiplayer, and so the only part i won't mod for.
but the rest of the game is single player and i mod and edit and console the heck out of the game with no guilt.
Certainly some mods are unbalanced or "cheaty", but there's plenty that aren't. Texture enhancements, UI improvements, improved lighting and weather effects, unofficial bug fixes, tons of extra settlement items, etc.
There's a lot you can add without breaking the gameplay, so I wouldn't say it's unfair to use mods and get achievements at the same time, especially when you can use console commands to teleport everywhere or move through walls, turn yourself invincible, and Insta-kill everything with the press of a button, but that's fine...
I mod mine back in with this:
https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/15639/
you make a good point here, and i agree that there are many mods that are not cheats.
some are just plain funny, like ringo the flamingo and the different suits of clothing and the seasons mods and i could go on and on.
i may have been too broad in my comments that mods are cheats.
many are not.
so yes i agree that there are many mods that are not cheats and some of them make large changes to the game.
sim settlements is a very large mod and it has many mods that mod sim settlements.
i don't think of it as a cheat.
thank you Suzaku for making this point.
I mean oh boy you 'joined X faction', is an achievement. My mods didn't matter at all really.
You get an "achievement" for simply leaving Vault 111 at the beginning, for crying out loud. These are hardly high hurdles.
The only dumb part is that they could have easily had different "builds" for the console versions but in fact, chose not to do so; they've had one unified build for years for their in-house games, even using papyrus script of all things for the ps3 version (this also exists on the pc version) which detects if you're on a ps3 (again..this is also on the pc version) and disables roughly 50 npc's so that the ps3 doesn't choke.
Although that's just Bethesdas fault..it's not like Obsidian gave themselves enough time to have seperate builds as they wanted to rush new vegas out the door.
but out of respect to the people that actually DO place a value on them, i will not get them in a way that is easier than those who are NOT using mods.
as has been pointed out, there are some mods that do not make it easier to get ahead in the game.
but there are some that change the game in a way that would clearly make it easier than if i did not use the mods.
let's make an example of a situation that i know will never arise, but i'll describe it anyway.
a group of people evaluate mods after they have been published to decide if they give advantage in game over non mod users or if they do not give an advantage.
then some mods are flagged as permitted in games without inhibiting achievements.
then there would be achievements allowed wit those mods.
as i said this will never come about, and the easier and more sensible way is to do things as they are now.
so while it may actually be a fairly easy thing to discriminate between what gives an advantage, what does not, it's enough of a source of problems that it's not really needed.
considering the mod that allows achievements, the whole thing is thrown onto the honor system.
the only reason i've carried on as much as i have is because the discussion interests me.
do as you will.
it's a small thing to me, i'll not lose respect for you.
"You completed this Achievement upon the Game Release. Have a nice Day."
the base game is pretty good and if that's all there was i'd like it very much.
but mods change the game.
sometimes into something completely different.
but it's often good.
it doesnt affect Nexus workshop mods though
"Any" plugin mods that aren't .lsx Creation Club plugins will disable achievements.
oh my bad then
only plugin mods though?
