Survival Mode Lost Companion

One moment companion is there. One moment they're not behind me. No idea where they are. Go back to settlement to wait, never comes.

So I figure ill force companion to come back. Go talk to Dogmeat to get him as companion and force old companion to return. Press E to talk and character "whitles" and dog meat barks but no dialouge options show.

Solutions? Remember I'm in survival mode so no console and I'm trying to play a vanilla survival experience.

It depends which companion it is. They have different default locations that they return to. In survival it you get far enough away oir don't theal them when they fall they should return to their default location. Saving and relaunching the game is your best tool for fixing busted scripting in vanilla survival.

if you have the vault 88 dlc use the vault computer to track them
