For that try PsychoBuff, good for 8 minutes. [real time 8 mins.]
I use it then unload with my most powerful gun and they usually never even get it hit off on me.
if you are playing on a harder difficulty, that could explain why they seem "weak". because on very hard, you do .5x damage to them and they do 2x damage to you.
but against npc's they both do 1x damage to each other.
you might notice this especially on survival because they do 4x to you, but still only 1x to the BOS
however, the assultrons actually are not that tanky.
the first time I saw an assulatron rushing me with the head laser charged up, I aimed for the head in VATS, that was a mistake.
their head seems to have a super high resistance.
if you just aim for the torso, you should be able to kill them.
I've never tried aiming for the legs though. I imagine you might be able to blow her leg off and then take cover.
I gave Ada assaultron head and watches it disintegrate Sentrybot with one blow with me standing beside Ada, devastating Af.
