Recurring affinity change?
I'm with a companion I don't like his side-quests and I just want to get his perk then get rid of him. I've been doing things he like in succession but it seems he only liked that the 1st time. To verify that I used the command "getav ca_affinity" and it was indeed so. When I have Piper as a companion, successive liked actions will modify her affinity. I'm wondering why it's not for that other companion.

The companion in question is Porter Gage[fallout.fandom.com] and I can't wait to have his perk[fallout.fandom.com] to start hunting raiders in Nuka-World.

Spend about 2 game days building a settlement. That will almost max out your companions affinity as they gain affinity for just being with you. Liked actions have a cool-down period and repeated liked actions of the same kind within that cool-down wont give affinity points.

There is supposed to be a cooldown inbetween the affinity boosting likes. Some do around this by quicksave/ quickload, which resets the cooldown timer for both likes and dislikes

Making quick repeated quick saves is a real good way to end up with a corrupted save file.
most companions you have to wait 1-2 days btwn repeat actions, like crafting a weapon or entering powersuits. if you have access to Console Cmd and want to shortcut it, "setav ca_affinity 999" and then do something they like/love.

Do you mean you don't wanna do any Nuka world quest? Because you should get the max affinity after you cleaned all the park sectors and before you can conquer the Commonwealth. Otherwise you will probably have to cheat, then sleep and wait for him to speak to you. But increase affinity in two steps: first admire, then idolize. Otherwise the script could block. Then idolizing never gets reached.

some companions wont advance thier affinity until you finish their quest: cait, mccredy, nick, danse. Until then their affinity is stuck no matter what you do

I have no intention of assigning any sector to any raider faction. The least I can help any raider, the better. Actually I want to help all of them, to end their suffering; except Gage since he saved my character.

Why can't I just do things he likes/loves that doesn't involve helping a raider until there's enough affinity?

Thanks again

Some companions will have a cooldown for actions that grant affinity), but for Nuka World in particular you can take advantage of Sierra Petrovita (who gives you the quest to find Cappy images in the parks). Her initial dialogue before her quest is like an affinity mill for most companions.

You can, it will just take a while. Fortunately Gage doesn't have any personal quest to limit him, so you just have to make sure you speak to him when he asks about it.

This is a bit misinformative, yes - affinity caps if u don't do the quest but it caps at 999/1000.
There are 5 progress bars starting from 0 affinity:
1: 0-249 - companion doesn't give a single fly about you
2: 250-499 - they like you
3: 500-749 - they are your pal / mate / dude / gal / w/e
4: 750-999 - they idolize you, share with problems and give quests ofc (on 750th aff point)
5: 1000 - you are their only love
So due to this if u start companion quest u still gain affinity before completition of given quest but you can't go to the next progress step which is final 1000 but you can grind their love and affection until you hit 999.

No, you cant, or at least I cant (with aft installed and what not I wouldnt vouch for it). As long as the quest is active I cant bank affinity. I wish I could

Well for me it works, when I checked some of my companions without completed quests I see their affinity as 999.00 in command prompt but I have over 200 mods installed (no companion mods though) so something could "break" here.
If you have mods, something could break at your end too.

i'll allow myself to cite fallout.fandom.com as well with Cait as an example:
"Notes: (...) Without completing this quest, the maximum level of affinity that can be reached with Cait is 999. This means that to be able to get her perk Trigger Rush, one has to complete this quest first."

This also should close that discussion (between us 2) as mentioning that "some companions wont advance thier affinity until you finish their quest" is pointless in this particular situation.

PS. Danse doesn't give companion quest, just BOS quests. Curie is the 4th and last quest giver.
