Edit: should I mention that it is a Tesla t60 power armor and that I have a bat that deals 350 damage.
I advise against it.
But I disagree with the spy. This game is way too easy. There are multiple ways to become a god and the game becomes a walking simulator with pretend combat. You have to work to keep it a challenge. Use mods or gimp yourself.
Just try it out in non survival until you get to about level 10. Then you can decide better. There is a chance that you will get a "game-breaking" disease in survival that a starter player will just die from and you will have to start over.
What? You're a hardcore player? Take it like a hardcore player. Really! Come on you are kidding me right. I play survival like no one else. Although I have finished each ending I am currently playing a no perks. At level 65 I still have not started the main quests, too busy trying to survive the everyday events. Never do chems and I don't wear power armor. I am still in pocketed. I did start the BOS and Railroad. The Railroad to get some radiant quests. I have been setting up settlements to get help defends. I only save when tired so each day survival is kind of like dead is dead but not so dramatic. Still a one hit kill from a few mobs.
If you are the hardcore gamer you say you are then survival should be a walk in the park.
Still, thanks for the encouragement!
I just can't go back to normal game play anymore. There is much more strategy involved in survival and a completely different train of thought needed.
I usually like to run straight to Egret Tours from the vault. From there you can do a lot of lower main game quests, setup several settlements and have easy access to Diamond City. However for a first time player Sanctuary/Red Rocket are like gold mines of resources to get you going. You can easily spend the first 9 or 10 levels there without much problem.
I never start the main quest until at least level 28 which also happens to be X01 armor level start which is good for your companion or settlers. So no Concord but a short trip to the diner will get Carla making regular trips to Sanctuary for supplies.
Keep the thought you are the weakest person in the commonwealth when making battle strategy. No run and gun. I use Curie the robot to get past the stimpack problem. That robot is a life saver no matter how annoying it is.
I push survival to the max without mods. It is a give and take for me. I put up with the bugs that most players use mods to overcome and in return I take advantage of the glitches.
I have never run into a game breaking bug that requires a restart. Though the nuisance bugs are there. I usually play 3 or more games at once. I do what I call "living in" plays where I pick a settlement and live in it without discovering any other POI. It is quite amazing how much you can travel and avoid everything. One that I have going now is about my 12th or so try to live on Spectacle Island.
Travel straight from the vault to spectacle Island picking up resources along the way. Avoiding any and all POI that can be discovered and then swimming to the island. From there building it up to be self sufficient living. This involves staying alive long enough to get a decent flow of food, settlers, stores, and defense. I usually take these plays to around level 30 before discarding.
I have these at Egret, Castle, Sanctuary, Spectacle Island, Taffington Boathouse, and tried at several more. Scrounging for resources without tripping POI discovery can be difficult. Sanctuary not so bad since you can get Carla the trader early before building a store.
Yes there are mods to 'tweak' survival mode, there are also mods that allow achievements despite using mods... :p
This said, some mods increase the CTD (Crash To Desktp) chance
Playing survival is best done without mods -> achievents / less CTD.
Though, knowing where and when you should sleep to save, could and probably should be figured in a non-survival game.
There is nothing more frustrating that successfully raid a super mutant base to then CTD on your way home...
If you liked the other parts of the fallout series, and loved them to play more than once, then I would HIGHLY recomend to make your first playthrough without mods in 'normal mode', to get known to the terrain.
Then in your second playthrough go survival.
Then for 3rd and later plays, you'll probably want to try some other mods that do things like increase HP pool of enemies, make nights actualy pitch black dark.
However, if you wish to play survival with mods on your first playthrough, I'd settle for landscape mods only, because otherwise it's becoming too easy.
If you think survival might be a tiny little bit too hard, you might want to try the mod "Heather Casdin" she's a great companion who follows you alongside dogmeat or any other regular companion.
And she brings natural medicine and several nice todo, immersive quests that show you some nice parts of the commonwealth.
Because once you lowered down from survival, there is no going back to survival!
Hope this helps, good luck and have fun! :)
EDIT:
On a last note:
I'm proud to say that I've completed the game without using mods on my first character!
Issue is, I did and didnt realize that I never got any further achievements once I had started a second character that DID use mods, which I had not disabled in between playing the character 'with' and 'without' mods...
And the most important pro tip, dont ever use Homemaker and/or SOE (SettlementObjectExtender)!
Because even something slight as a changed loadorder 'might' destroy your build menu, however, a missing/removed mod, will destroy your build menu for the save game for granted!
Well, do this at level 70+
And do in a console:
savegame myname-lvl70-before-mods
This will create a savegame file in:
<My Docs>/My Games/Fallout4/Saves/myname-lvl70-before-mods.fos
Then try out (the above, or any) mods.
I do recomend to do such a savegame every 10 levels and play without mods for as long as possible, then do such an extra save.
Nothing is more annoying than a destroyed savegame because the used mods are no longer in order.
