How would VATS function in real life?
Im curious on how the Fallout games VATS (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) works in real life. Im pretty sure there will be some kind of 'targeting' bullet. Some what like missles which lock onto certain body parts. However I highly doubt there will be a slow-mo effect. How do you guys think VATS would work in the real world?

I don't think about video game stuff in the real world. That is why I play video games. I also don't cheat when I play them, wink wink.

I like to think about how Video games stuff would function in the real world. And I usually cheat for fun. Its fun to randomly spawn 50 super-mutants randomly and watch them murder DC.
I think it's meant to be linked into your neural pathways or whatever (I am no neuroscientist, but nor is whoever came up with VATS, probably), so essentially it kind of 'slows time' by speeding up your reaction/promoting a state of extreme focus, allowing you to calculate your shots precisely, particularly at ranges appropriate to your equipped weapon. It's part of the Pip-Boy, in other words (let's ignore the fact that you can use VATS before finding the Pip-Boy in the vanilla intro...)

Think of it like smart guns in Aliens. Its a small computer attached to a heads up display that helps you aim where you need to, in Aliens thats why the folks with the big weapons (smart guns) wore those little eye pieces. In Fallout the only explanation for VATS is that the pipboy somehow magically integrates with your cornea, adding a heads up display on the fly. It also magically integrates with your brain, helping you to quickly find the specific target(s) you want in the chaos of battle.

The time dilation effect is easy to explain. Time doesn't actually slow down, its just relative, your mind is working with the VATS system to quickly pick targets out of the chaos around you which makes time seem to move slower for you.

The fact that you take much less damage while using VATS can't really be explained though. The only rational explanation would be that the VATS system somehow creates a shield around the user while its active, but energy shields don't exist in the Fallout universe so... its magic.

I was alluding to your achievement cheating, but it doesn't matter.

Actually, some how achievemnts dont get disabled when you use console commands. So yeah they are techincally 'cheated'

Thanks for the explanation

Well, the Institute also have something basically identical that they were working on for Gen 3 synths. Though the way they describe it makes me think that their visualization of the hit chances would be more like imagining something than number popups literally appearing in their field of vision.

"In select Gen 3 units, the synthetic brain is indeed capable of accepting specific enhancements to the visual cortex, basal ganglia and right parietal cortex. The result is substantially improved combat effectiveness, due to two factors:

1.) An increased understanding of weapon accuracy, to the extent that the combatant can actually visualize the percentage of effectively hitting targets (or smaller areas on those targets).

2.) An altered sense of perception that mimics the effect of slowing, or even stopping, time.

Recommend we commence surgery and field trials on appropriate operatives in the near future".

It's another case of internal work, though, not something you just slap onto your wrist. But then, the Sole Survivor can use VATS in Vault 111, before they get the Pipboy in the first place.
