You can build around or over the top of everything. Best way is follow thru even if you are not sure you will like it. What you will find is there are portions that you do like and will give you ideas to make entire settlement. I post a few screens to share some ideas.

You can build a cozy home inside that cave (which isn't something you can do in any other settlement), other than that it's a pretty pointless place.

Wow, those are pretty impressive settlements. My Coastal Cottage has the bare minimum required to be considered livable.

I build everything 2 3 floors off the ground .
Ghouls , raiders , and super mutants don't fly until my missile turrets blow them up .

It really kills me that jobs spawn in settlements past walls and defenses .

I hate fixing my garden and seeing dead cows .

In order to avoid the mobs spawning you need to leave pathways. On my Costal Cottage I have my farm inside the walls but there is a large path all the way in. It is easy to protect since you know where they will try to enter.

Honestly, you guys got me sold on using the metal structures here, the metal looks really good with minimal effort, which is rare being that those tube buildings are pretty ugly almost anywhere else.
