High "SWAP" usage?
Hey everyone

I was just wondering if I could get some help with my issue of having a high so called SWAP (seen with the help of Rainmeter) when running Fallout 4 especially.
The percentage is usually around 70%, but has reached as high as 85%. The RAM usage is rated high as well, usually around 50-60%. While running other games and programs though, whether they are on Steam or not, the SWAP and RAM aren't affected and lay calmly around 30%. I am sure this wasn't any issue I've ever had before, and am therefor now concerned.

The effects of this is the loading time in-game, and perhaps the overall performance that the computer can offer. I am however entirely sure that the loading time has been increased, and despite trying various simpler solutions like deleting old save files and lowering the graphics the problem doesn't seem to go away. Searching the web about it has given me nothing useful either.

To sum it up- the game is playable, but I can clearly notice performance differences and SWAP and RAM usage has gone a bit insane. I will be thankful for any help I could get for this guys!

Thanks.

FO4 can be a system hog expecially when using the HR texture pack with ultra settings.
Only thing you can really do is add more ram/lower settings and/or stop using the texture pack.

The swap file is virtual memory (RAM) and set up/managed via windows.
Its best to leave it set to system managed size.
Only real exception being is IF a faster drive than C: is available,
than moving it to the faster drive is in order but still using system managed size is advisable.

But to sum it up, the swap file is there to help increase system preformance.
RAM itself is much faster than even the fastest storage systems currently available.
High ram useage isnt uncommon nor will it slow the system down assuming its working properly?

But if its swapping out to the storage system (drive) excessively it will negatively effect preformance Leaving only one option. (again, assuming everythings working properly)
Add more and/or faster RAM if the options available for you?
Aside from than, do normal drive maintenance, disc cleanup/defragment (HDD)/trim (SSD)

Even then the game is what it is (system hog) you may not get optimal preformance from the system you are running?
It loves the x99 platform/extreme edition CPU's and GTX 1080(s) GPU's.

I understand fully. However I'm currently using medium / low graphics, by the way having a GTX 760 (3GB) - and 8 GB is the RAM capacity. I still do think the performance could do a bit better, so a cleanup is what I should try maybe? Excuse my lack of knowledge in the subject, but will that damage / remove any nessecary files or does it solely "clean" the disc from excessive memory stealing space?

Thanks:)

This is normal behavior. Your computer is paging, that means, using part of your hard drive as system RAM because your computer does not have enough memory to work with the game.

8 GB systems will do this all the time, which makes them highly inadequate to play this game in higher settings, depending on the amount of mods and texture quality you're using, it's occasional on 16 GB machines too. You'll only be truly paging-free on a PC with 24 or 32 GB of RAM running the game at maximum quality settings, loads of mods, and high-resolution textures, unless you've got lots and lots of video memory (12 GB+).

I don't advise disabling the paging file, because without it the computer will simply close up the game when it runs out of memory and/or crash. The only way out for you is buying more RAM for your PC, or lowering your graphics settings to minimize paging. Unfortunately, with 8 GB of RAM, the game will always be paging some memory, and since storage is much slower than RAM (even the fastest SSDs are), this will cause inconsistent performance, hitching, stuttering, lag, and long loading times.

I see! Will have to consider this behavior normal then, until I upgrade. Thank you man^^
